Le Completion Slides Action Anchors
The "Le" Particle for Completion
Mandarin Grammar Lesson 1
What's the Difference?
Scenario A
I am drinking coffee.
(Action in progress)
Scenario B
I drank the coffee.
(Action finished!)
In English, we change the word: drink → drank.
In Mandarin, the verb stays the same. We just add an "anchor."
The Magic of No Conjugation
English
Eat → Ate
Walk → Walked
Mandarin
吃 → 吃 了
走 → 走 了
The Particle
The character 了 (le) is our primary tool.
The Placement
Place it right after the verb.
The Meaning
It indicates completion, not necessarily time.
Building a Sentence
Formula:
Subject + Verb 了 + Object
我吃了饭。
Wǒ chī le fàn.
I ate (the) meal.
他看了书。
Tā kàn le shū.
He read (the) book.
我们买了票。
Wǒmen mǎi le piào.
We bought (the) tickets.
你喝了水。
Nǐ hē le shuǐ.
You drank (the) water.
Brain Shift: Aspect vs. Tense
English: Tense
Focuses on when it happened. We change the verb for past, present, and future.
Mandarin: Aspect
Focuses on the state of the action. Was it completed? Is it continuing?
"Le" doesn't mean "yesterday." It means DONE.
You can even use "le" for future actions that will be completed before something else happens!
The "Anchor" Challenge
Where does the 了 go?
妈妈 买 ___ 苹果。
Māmā mǎi ___ píngguǒ.
姐姐 洗 ___ 衣服。
Jiějiě xǐ ___ yīfu.
我 听 ___ 音乐。
Wǒ tīng ___ yīnyuè.
Answer: After the Verb!

THE ANCHOR RULE
In Mandarin, we don't change the verb to "ate" or "walked." We anchor the action in completion by adding 了 (le) directly after the verb.
1
The Completion Shift
Convert these present actions into completed actions by adding the 'le' anchor in the correct spot.
我 喝 水。
(I drink water)
我 喝 了 水。
妈妈 买 苹果。
(Mom buys apples)

他 看 电影。

Scrambled Events

了 他 做 功课
(Meaning: He finished his homework.)
我 饭 了 吃

My Busy Morning
Translate these sentences into Mandarin to describe what you did this morning. Remember: Verb + 了 + Object.
1. I drank tea.
2. I read a book.
3. I washed my clothes.

Lesson 1: Intro to Completed Actions
Duration
55 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will be able to distinguish between an action in progress and a completed action, marking the latter with the particle 了 (le) in the correct grammatical position (Verb + 了).
Common Misconception
"Le is the past tense ending -ed."
Clarify that Mandarin has aspect, not tense. We can use 'le' for something that will be completed in the future. Avoid translating 'le' as '-ed' too literally.
Key Vocab
吃 chī (eat)
喝 hē (drink)
买 mǎi (buy)
看 kàn (watch)
做 zuò (do)

The Trigger Hook

Input & Formula
Use Slide Deck. Focus on Verb + 了. Explicitly point out that the verb itself never changes shape.

Guided Practice
Distribute Le Anchor Worksheet. Complete Section 1 as a class, then let students tackle Section 2 in pairs.

Exit Ticket: The Snap
Students must say one thing they "did" this morning before leaving. Must include 'le'. Correct placement immediately if errors occur.
Differentiation Strategy
Support
Provide visual "Le" cards that students can physically place after a verb card in sentence-building activities.
Extension
Ask advanced students to use "le" with multi-syllable verbs or add measure words to the objects (e.g., 我吃了一个苹果).

Negating Past Actions with 'Meiyou'
Mandarin Grammar Lesson 2
How do we say "DID NOT"?
Normal Negation
不 (Bù)
Used for habits, facts, and the future.
"I don't eat meat." / "I won't go."
Past Negation
没有 (Méiyǒu)
Used for actions that DID NOT happen.
"I didn't eat." / "I didn't go."
Rule #1: Use 没有 for anything that hasn't happened yet or didn't happen in the past.
The Disappearing "Le"
Positive
我看了。
I watched (it).
Negative
我没有看。
I didn't watch.
GOLDEN RULE
When you use 没有, the 了 MUST disappear!
You cannot have "le" and "meiyou" in the same simple past sentence.
