Part 1 • The Anatomy of One-Point Perspective
Notice how all depth lines converge at a single spot
Horizon Line (Eye Level) VP Above Eye Level (See Bottom) Below Eye Level (See Top) Convergence Map: Orthogonals (purple) lead directly to VP (amber)
1. Horizon Line (HL / Eye Level):
The viewer's eye height across the image. Separates ground from sky.
2. Vanishing Point (VP):
The single focal point on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to meet as they recede away.
3. Orthogonal (Receding) Lines:
Straight ruler lines that angle from the corners of shapes back into space toward the vanishing point.
1
Front Faces Stay Flat
Horizontal lines stay horizontal; vertical lines stay vertical (transversals).
2
Always Use a Ruler
Every receding corner must connect precisely to the single vanishing point dot.
3
Cut-Off Depth Straight
Back edges must be strictly parallel to front edges—never tilted or skewed!
Part 2 • Precision Guided Practice: Three Elevations
Use your ruler to align every corner to the center Vanishing Point (VP).
Ruler Required
Horizon Line (Eye Level)
VP
Front A
Box A (Above): Draw orthogonals from the 3 visible corners to VP. Cut off depth with horizontal/vertical lines. Shade the bottom surface!
Front B
Box B (At Eye Level): Connect left corners to VP. Notice: Can you see the top or bottom of this box? Write answer: ________________
Front C (Crate)
Box C (Below): Connect top & side corners to VP. Add wood planks or window panels receding back into space.
Quality Check: Did you draw light construction lines with a ruler before inking or darkening the solid edges?
Unit 3: Linear Perspective & Illusions of Space Turn to Page 2 for the Personal Choice Studio Scene →
Studio Application • Student Choice Project
Personal Choice Perspective Arena
Select your world, establish your vanishing point, and construct realistic space.
Page 2 of 2 • Major Studio Grade
Step 1: Check your chosen environment (Pick ONE):
🏙️ Sci-Fi City Street
🛏️ Dream Bedroom Interior
🚀 Spaceship Docking Bay
🛣️ Infinite Desert Railroad
Technical Checklist (Must Include):
- Ruler-drawn Horizon Line (HL)
- One clear Vanishing Point (VP)
- At least 4 receding structures / objects
- True transversals (verticals stay 90° straight)
- Scale shift (larger in front, smaller in distance)
DRAWING ARENA • 1-POINT PERSPECTIVE CANVAS RULE: LIGHT INITIAL LINES, HEAVY FINAL CONTOURS
Tip: You decide the height of your horizon line! High = looking down; Low = looking up.
Draw your scene here using clean ruler orthogonals connecting back to your chosen VP.
Artist Perspective Reflection
1. Where did you place your Vanishing Point, and why?
2. How did you create the illusion of depth or distance?
Self-Evaluation: Orthogonals straight: ⭐⭐⭐ Scale change visible: ⭐⭐⭐ Clean craftsmanship: ⭐⭐⭐
