Technical Airway Management

Landmarking
"Support the jaw bone without covering the mouth or nose. Use your thigh for leverage."

5 BACK BLOWS: Head down. Firm heel-of-hand strikes between the shoulder blades.

THE FLIP: Support head/neck. Flip onto back along the other forearm.

5 CHEST THRUSTS: Center of chest, just below nipple line. 2 fingers. 1.5" depth.

Intrathoracic Pressure
"The Goal: Use the air trapped in the lungs to forcefully pop the blockage out."

POSITION: Lean victim forward. Wrap arms around the waist.

FIST: Thumb side against abdomen, just above the navel.

J-MOTION: Pull IN and UP sharply until the object is cleared.
Critical Note
If the victim becomes unconscious: Stop thrusts. Lower them gently to the floor. Call 911. Start CPR with compressions.

The Technical Sequence

Stop Sign
Place nearest arm at a right angle to the body, palm up.

Cheek Pad
Cross far arm. Place back of hand against near cheek.
03
Kickstand
Pull far knee up. Pull at knee and shoulder to roll onto side.
04
Open Airway
Tilt head back. Hand under cheek keeps the airway open.
Physics: The Kickstand
"Without the 90° leg position, gravity will roll the unconscious victim onto their chest. This restricts lung expansion and can cause airway closure."

Re-check breathing every 2 min.
Monitor for signs of shock.

Station C: Wound Care
Aseptic Hygiene & Barriers
Hygiene Aseptic

The Barrier Principle
Nitrile or latex gloves are mandatory. Protect against bloodborne pathogens (BBP) found in human serum.
Contamination Rule:
Zero contact with personal equipment (pens, phones) once gloves are on.

Technical Debris Removal
Irrigate with clean, low-pressure water. Wipe in a circular pattern from center outward.
Hygiene Logic
"Cleaning inward drags transient bacteria from healthy skin into the sterile wound bed."

Occlusive Anchoring
Apply sterile pad. Do not touch the contact side. Secure edges with medical tape.

Advanced Hygiene: Glove Removal
Pinch the outside of the first glove near the wrist. Peel away turning inside out. Slide two fingers of your clean hand under the second wrist. Peel inside out. Dispose immediately.
