Balancing Act Lesson Plan
Levels (Low/Med/High) & Body Shapes (Wide/Narrow)
Equipment 1 noodle & 1 circle spot per student, music
Focus Concepts Levels (Low/Med/High) & Shapes (Wide/Narrow)
Motor Skills Non-locomotor balance, spatial self-awareness
SHAPE Standards Standard 1 (Balance) & Standard 2 (Space/Levels)
Student "I Can" Objectives
- ✔ Levels: I can balance my noodle at a low level, medium level, and high level.
- ✔ Shapes: I can freeze into a wide statue and a narrow statue with my noodle.
- ✔ Control: I can stay on my circle spot and keep my noodle in my space bubble.
Noodle Safety Protocol
-
- No Swords: Noodles are balancing tools, never taggers or swords.
-
- Spot Anchors: Keep feet centered on your circle spot during stationary balances.
-
- Freeze Signal: When drum beats or music stops: "Noodle down, feet on ground."
PART 1
Warm-Up: The Noodle Stretch Machine
6 Minutes
1. Sky Reacher (High)
Hold noodle horizontally with two hands. Reach high into the clouds on tiptoes. Count to 5.
Cue: "Touch the ceiling sky!"
2. Steering Wheel (Medium)
Hold noodle at chest level. Gentle torso twists left and right while marching knees up on spot.
Cue: "Drive your balance bus!"
3. Floor Worms (Low)
Squat low over spot. Roll noodle gently back and forth under palms without letting it roll away.
Cue: "Down in the low grass!"
PART 2
Main Skill Exploration: Balancing Act
12 Minutes
Set Up Gym Floor Layout: Spread circle spots out evenly around the gym (at least 6 feet apart) and have one student stand at each spot. Give one noodle to each student to begin at their home spot.
A Horizontal Body Balancing Across 3 Levels
6 Mins
Challenge students to balance the noodle horizontally (flat like a bridge) across different body parts while anchored on their spot:
Low Level (Floor/Feet) Balance across tops of both sneakers, across ankles in seated pose, or on knees in crab crouch.
Medium Level (Waist/Chest) Balance across flat open palms (pancake hands), on forearms, or tucked at hip fold.
High Level (Head/Shoulders) Balance across back of shoulders (yoke pose) or across flat head standing tall like a crane.
Teacher Coaching Cue: "Laser eyes on the center stripes! Breathe slow and steady to freeze your body!"
B Ground Statues: Wide Base vs. Narrow Tower
6 Mins
Horizontal Noodle = Wide Statue
Lay noodle horizontally across the circle spot. Students straddle with feet spread wide, arms outstretched like an airplane.
Prompt: "Make your statue wide as a mountain!"
Vertical Noodle = Narrow Statue
Stand noodle upright vertically on circle spot, balancing with one index finger. Body freezes into a NARROW pencil statue, feet zipped together.
Prompt: "Make your statue thin as a toothpick!"

Gamification, Closure & Adaptations
Balancing Act • PE Guide
PART 3
Gamified Challenge: "The Magical Noodle Museum"
8 Minutes
The Story Hook: The gymnasium is a sculpture museum at night! When the music plays, students are "Night Visitors" quietly navigating around the circle spots carrying their noodles safely with two hands. When music stops, students quickly find the nearest circle spot and freeze into the announced sculpture!
1 Round 1: Level Freeze
Teacher calls: "Freeze at LOW level on a spot!" or "HIGH level!" Students rush safely to any circle spot and balance the noodle for 5 silent seconds.
Goal: Fast reaction to spatial levels
2 Round 2: Wide & Narrow
Teacher calls: "Wide Mountain!" (horizontal noodle on spot, wide stance) or "Narrow Pencil!" (vertical balance on spot, tall thin pose).
Goal: Rapid body-shape contrast
3 Round 3: Museum Inspector
Teacher acts as "The Museum Night Guard." Walk through the spots looking for the stillest, wobble-free statue to name the "Sculpture of the Round!"
Goal: Sustained core stillness
PART 4
Cool-Down & Debrief: "The Melting Noodle"
4 Minutes
Mindful Cool-Down Routine
Students sit cross-legged on their circle spots. Hold noodles high overhead (deep breath in). On the exhale, slowly "melt" down through medium level to low level, resting noodles across knees like a calm seatbelt.
Breathe in: Stretch High • Breathe out: Melt Low
Kindergarten Reflection Questions
- Q1: "Show me with your hands: which level is down by the grass? (Low!)"
- Q2: "When you made a WIDE statue on your spot, did you feel wobbly or sturdy like a rock? Why?"
- Q3: "Where did your eyes look to keep your noodle from wobbling?"
Adaptations & Special Needs Supports
UDL Framework
Physical & Motor Skills
- • Half-Length Noodles: Provide 2-foot sliced noodles for smaller hands or students with balance challenges.
- • Seated / Wheelchair Option: Perform all 3 levels while seated on spot or wheelchair (lap, chest, overhead).
- • Non-Slip Spot Rings: Tape a flat noodle ring directly on the circle spot so the noodle cannot roll.
Sensory & Attention Needs
- • High-Contrast Spots: Use bright textured circle spots for clear visual boundary recognition.
- • Tactile Tape Grips: Add textured grip tape to center balance points for tactile feedback.
- • Audio Sensitivity: Use visual stop signs or soft chime instead of loud whistles/music cuts.
Cognitive & Multilingual
- • Visual Level Cards: Hold up illustrated cards showing Low (frog), Med (bear), High (giraffe).
- • Peer Modeling: Place next to a movement buddy who demonstrates poses on their neighbor spot.
- • Gestural Prompting: Teacher models wide arms vs. narrow pencil alongside verbal commands.
Quick Observation Checklist (Teacher Formative Assessment)
Classroom Assessment
1. Level Identification Can distinguish and move body/noodle between low, medium, and high heights on cue.
2. Shape Discrimination Demonstrates a clear wide base (feet apart) vs. narrow base (feet together, upright) on spot.
3. Safety & Control Maintains self-space on circle spot and freezes immediately upon auditory/visual signal.
