Walkthrough Preparation Checklist
- Park the school bus in a quiet, safe area.
- Turn on the interior lights; keep engine off initially.
- Place a friendly stuffed mascot in the driver's seat.
- Have stickers or "Bus Explorer" badges ready.
STATION 1
The Big Yellow Friendly Giant (Meet & Greet)
Gather the group 10 feet away from the front of the bus.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN & PARENTS:
"Welcome, brave adventurers, to our Yellow Bus Safari! Look at this magnificent yellow bus behind me. He is a very friendly giant who is going to help carry you to your school adventure every single day! Can we all give our big yellow friend a giant wave? Let's say: 'Hi, big yellow bus!'"
FACILITATOR ACTION & INTERACTIVE PAUSE:
Introduce the driver. "Our driver is like the captain of a spaceship! Let's say hello to Captain [Driver's Name]! They have the most important job: keeping us all safe, snug, and happy. Whenever you get on, a big smile and a 'Hello!' always makes our driver super happy."
STATION 2
Climbing the Golden Mountain (Boarding)
Move to the bus door. Form a single file line with parents right behind children.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN & PARENTS:
"Now, we are going to climb the steps into the bus! These are high steps, just like climbing a friendly golden mountain. To stay perfectly safe, we use the golden rule of boarding: The Handrail Hold. Can you squeeze this strong handrail with your hand? Take your time, one giant step at a time."
COACHING PARENTS:
"Parents, as your child boards, encourage them to grip the handrail themselves. Do not carry them unless physically necessary. Practicing this independent step now builds immediate school-day confidence!"
STATION 3
Finding Your Cozy Nest (Safe Seating)
Guide families down the aisle. Have kids sit with parents in seats.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN:
"Look at these big, bouncy, green seats! They are your cozy nests. Let's practice sitting down like a nesting bird. There are three simple rules to keep us perfectly cozy and safe:
1. Bottom to Bottom Your bottom is glued to the seat bottom.
2. Back to Back Your back is resting flat against the cushion.
3. Feet to Floor Your feet point down, leaving the aisle clear.

STATION 4
The Whispering Engine Game (Voice Levels)
Children and parents are seated inside the bus.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN:
"Since the driver has such an important job driving us safely down the road, they need to use their ears to listen to traffic. We are going to play a game called The Whispering Engine! When I start the engine (clapping my hands), we must talk only in our quietest library whispers. Ready? Let's whisper our favorite colors to our grown-up!"
FACILITATOR ACTION:
Clap hands once to "start the engine." Whisper with the kids. Correct anyone speaking loudly with a friendly finger to the lips: "Shh, you're a super quiet motor!" Emphasize that screams or loud shouts can surprise the driver.
STATION 5
The Safe Step-Down (Exiting)
Prepare the group to exit the bus in a calm, orderly line.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN:
"We have arrived at our virtual jungle outpost! Now we are going to exit. But wait! We never stand up while the bus is moving. Let's pretend the bus is stopping... *squeeeeak!* Now, stand up slowly, look around for your items, and hold that strong handrail all the way down the steps. Let's step out nicely!"
STATION 6
The Magic Safety Bubble (Outside the Bus)
Gather children in front of the bus, at least 10 giant steps away.
SAY TO THE CHILDREN & PARENTS:
"Look back at the bus driver in their seat. Can you see them? Can you see their eyes? If you can see their eyes, they can see you! The bus has a Magic Safety Bubble that goes ten giant steps all the way around it. Let's take ten giant steps together away from the bumper! Let's count: 1, 2, 3... 10! We always stay outside this bubble unless the driver waves us forward with a big 'high-five' gesture!"
COACHING PARENTS ON THE "DANGER ZONE":
"Parents, please emphasize the 10-foot 'Danger Zone' around the school bus. Teach your child never to bend down near the tires or bumper to pick up a dropped folder or toy. If they drop something, they must always ask the driver or an adult for help."
Closing Reassurance for Families
Congratulate each student as they finish their walkthrough! Hand them their custom explorer sticker or badge. Look parents in the eye and reinforce that bus transit is statistically the safest way for kids to travel to school. Let them know the drivers are highly trained, highly caring individuals dedicated to their child's daily transitions.

The Happy Bus Stop Wait
When waiting for the bus, we stand in a safe spot away from the street. Hold your grown-up's hand, watch for the big yellow friend to come down the road, and give the driver a giant wave!

Holding the Golden Handrail
When the bus stops completely and the door swings open, walk up the steps one at a time. Make sure to hold the handrail tightly with your strong hand. It keeps you balanced!

Three Rules of Nesting
Find your seat and sit down cozy like a little nesting bird. Remember: Bottom to Bottom (sit on your bottom), Back to Back (lean against the seat back), and Feet to Floor (keep the aisle empty!).

The driver needs to hear all the cars and horns outside to keep us safe. We use quiet talking or library whispers during the ride. Let's save our big, loud cheering voices for the playground!

Managing First-Day Bus Jitters
1. The Happy Goodbye (Quick & Confident)
Children read and mimic your emotional cues. If you look worried, they will feel worried. Keep goodbyes short, wear a big smile, and say: "I can't wait to hear about your bus ride when you get home!" Avoid lingering or long emotional hugs at the door.
2. Establish a Calm Morning Rhythm
Rushing creates anxiety. Aim to arrive at the bus stop 5-10 minutes early. This gives your child time to adjust, chat, look forward to the bus arrival, and prevent morning panic.
3. Safety Bubble Awareness
Practice counting out "10 giant steps" away from the bumper at home. Reinforce that if they drop anything near the bus, they must never reach for it; they must ask the driver for help.

"I pledge to use my friendly eyes, quiet whisper voice, and hold the handrail tightly. I will keep my bottom on the seat and my body safe inside our yellow friend."
