Students will expressively sign 11 standard color vocabulary words using precise handshape, location, and movement parameters.

The 4 Manual Parameters of Color Signs
To build expressive accuracy, teachers must emphasize that a change in any parameter changes the meaning of a sign:
1. Handshape Most color signs use initialized alphabet shapes (B for blue, G for green).
2. Location Signs are made either near the face/chin (red, pink) or in neutral space (blue, green).
3. Movement Shaking/twisting in space vs. stroking/tapping on the chin/face.
4. Orientation Palm facing inward (red, pink) vs. palm facing outward/neutral (yellow, green).

Divide students into small groups. Task them with organizing their colored items (backpacks, pencils, folders) in order of the spectrum without speaking or writing . This establishes the non-verbal visual modality required for ASL focus.

Introduce the 11 signs grouped by movement/location categories using the companion Slide Deck:
Chin Contact Series: RED (index finger strokes chin), PINK ("P" handshape middle finger strokes chin).Neutral Space Shakes: BLUE ("B"), GREEN ("G"), PURPLE ("P"), YELLOW ("Y"). Twist/shake from wrist.Descriptive/Representational: ORANGE (squeeze near chin), BLACK (index finger draws line across brow).

Silent Outfit Showcase & Exit Assessment
Gather in a large circle. The teacher points to a student. The adjacent student must sign that student's clothing item and its color correctly to exit. Example response: "PANTS BLUE" or "SHIRT RED".
Common Sign Pitfalls
Mixing up GREEN and BLUE: Explain that "G" is signed with thumb and index horizontal, shaking. "B" uses flat-hand, shaking.The "P" Handshape Twist (Purple vs. Pink): Pink is signed on the chin with middle finger tapping. Purple is signed in neutral space, wrist shaking.Orange Squeeze Location: Students often sign ORANGE on their cheek instead of right below the chin/mouth.
Pacing & Differentiation
For Struggling Signers: Group colors by handshape family first. Focus initially on "initialized" colors where English first-letter matches ASL letter (B-Blue, Y-Yellow, G-Green, P-Purple).For Advanced Signers: Introduce shades of colors. Demonstrate how facial expression and muscle tension sign "BRIGHT red" (sharp, fast) versus "soft pink" or adding "LIGHT" and "DARK" pre-nominal signs.

The 4 Manual Parameters
Every sign in ASL is made of four physical characteristics. Change one, and you change the meaning!
1. Handshape
The shape of your fingers (e.g., initialized alphabet letters like "B" or "Y").
2. Location
Where the sign is positioned (on the chin, near the chest, or in neutral space).
3. Movement
The action of the hands (shaking, twisting, tapping, or sweeping).
4. Orientation
The direction your palm is facing (inward, outward, or sideways).

These colors are signed on the chin with downward stroking movements.
RED Index Stroke
How to Sign: Brush the tip of your index finger down across your lips/chin twice.

PINK P-Handshape
How to Sign: Form the "P" handshape and stroke the middle finger down across your lips/chin.
Parameters: Handshape: "P" | Location: Chin | Movement: Downward stroke | Palm: Inward
Tip: Keep movement tight and expressive near the face.
Group 2: Neutral Space Shakers
These signs use initialized letters and are shaken gently in front of your shoulder.
BLUE
Form a "B" handshape (flat hand with thumb tucked). Shake your wrist from side to side.
Parameters:
GREEN
Form a "G" handshape (index and thumb pinched slightly). Shake wrist in neutral space.
Parameters:
YELLOW
Form a "Y" handshape (pinky and thumb extended). Twist/shake wrist in neutral space.
Parameters:
PURPLE
Form a "P" handshape. Shake your wrist sideways in front of your shoulder.

Station One: Handshape Matchmaker
Tactile Focus
The Challenge: Form groups of 3-4. Lay out your vocabulary flashcards face down. One student turns over a card and must identify the ASL handshape used (e.g., B, G, Y, P, or Index finger).
Expression Checkpoints:
Are fingers fully extended for the "B" handshape in BLUE?
Is the thumb resting sideways for the "G" handshape in GREEN?
Are other fingers completely folded down for the "Y" handshape in YELLOW?

Station Two: Movement Mastery
Kinesthetic Focus
The Challenge: Draw a card. Without signing the name of the color, demonstrate ONLY the movement of the sign (shaking, stroking, squeezing, or drawing). Your partners must guess the color sign!
Mechanical Accuracy Rules:
SHAKING: Keep forearm still; flick/shake only your wrist (Blue, Green, Yellow).
STROKING: Brush finger gently downward across bottom lip twice (Red, Pink).
