TURNING DYNAMICS & ACTIVITY PROTOCOLS

Arena Floor Management & Structured Gameplay

Session Blueprint

3 WIDE TURNING & DIRECTION CHANGES (THE 4 KEYS)

1. Visual Spotting

Look past the cone to the exit line. The chin and shoulders lead the arc.

2. Scissor Lead

Slide the inside skate 4–6 inches ahead of the outside skate for stability.

3. Ankle Lean

Lean ankles and edges into turn center; keep spine tall and shoulders level.

4. Wide Radius

Carve broad sweeping paths (5–8 ft diameter) to maintain forward flow.

ARENA FLOOR DIVISION SCHEMATIC (50 x 80 FT STANDARD GYM/RINK) One-way traffic counter-clockwise

← Perimeter Safety Warm-Up Lane (5 ft boundary) Exit Flow →

ZONE A: RED LIGHT / GREEN LIGHT Starting baseline → 40 ft sprint lane → Stop check boundary

ZONE B: SLALOM OBSTACLE COURSE 5 Slalom cones (6 ft apart) → Carousel loop → 4x4 ft Stop Box

ACTIVITY 1: RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT (STOP & DECEL ARENA) 12 Mins

Execution: Coach stands at far endline with colored visual cones or hand paddles. On "GREEN LIGHT", skaters stride forward smoothly. On "YELLOW LIGHT", skaters coast in Gear 2 and feather wheels. On "RED LIGHT", skaters must execute an instant snowplow stop and freeze completely.

Coach Rule: Anyone drifting more than 1 skate length after "Red" takes 3 steps backward.

Progression Challenge: Call "Yellow" for 3 seconds before "Red" to train controlled deceleration vs panic stops.

ACTIVITY 2: THE SLALOM OBSTACLE COURSE 15 Mins

Course Path: 1) Start gate → 2) 5-Cone Slalom (wide carving S-turns) → 3) 360° Center Carousel circle → 4) Sprint lane → 5) Precision Snowplow Stop Box marked with floor tape.

Scoring: 3 points for clean cone turns; 2 points for carousel; 5 points for stopping completely inside the box without touching tape.

Beginner Support: Increase cone spacing to 8–10 ft. Allow two-foot gliding through turns.

Advanced Challenge: Add a sudden whistle signal during course where skater must freeze immediately.

COOLDOWN & CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING (5 MIN DEBRIEF)

  • Kinesthetic check: "Why do we push our heels out instead of just turning toes in during a snowplow stop?" (Prevents wheels colliding; uses friction surface).
  • Spatial check: "Where should your eyes look when carving around an obstacle cone?" (Past the cone toward your exit target, not down at feet).
  • Self-assessment: Have students hold up 1, 2, or 3 fingers to rate their stopping confidence today.

Skater Reflection: Technique & Body Control

1. Which technique helped you slow down or stop with the most balance today (knees bent, feet wedge, or inside edges)? Explain why.

2. When navigating through the obstacle cones, why is it dangerous to look directly down at your skates instead of looking forward where you want to go?
