• Identify & Connect: Connect 2D geometric shapes to real-world house features (squares = walls, triangles = roofs, rectangles = doors/chimneys, circles = windows/sun).
• Architectural Composition: Assemble shapes sequentially (foundation, walls, roof, details) to compose a balanced collage house.
• Fine Motor & Geometry Counting: Cut along dashed cutting guides, apply glue accurately, and tally shapes on a math recording sheet.

1-2 Shape House Cutout Sheets (print on bright colored paper)
Blunt safety scissors & 1 washable glue stick

Instructional Delivery (45-50 Min Timeline)
1 Hook: The Shape Architect Chant (8 Minutes) Slides 1–2
Gather on the rug. Ask: "Look around our school. What shapes make the walls? What shape is the door?" Lead the Architect Chant : "Build a square house on the ground, add a triangle roof safe and sound! Slide a rectangle for the door, peek through circle windows on the floor!"
2 Direct Modeling: The "Dry Blueprint" Test (7 Minutes) Slides 3–4
Under the document camera, demonstrate cutting out a big square and triangle. Place them on the creation canvas without glue . Show that placing the roof first leaves no room for the house! Emphasize: "Walls First, Roof on Top, Then Glue!"
3 Studio Time: Cut, Build & Decorate (22 Minutes) Slide 5
Students build their houses. Challenge them to create at least 1 door, 2 windows, and a chimney. Encourage custom additions using crayons: door knobs, curtains, chimney smoke swirls, grass, and sunbeams!
4 Cleanup Routine & Neighborhood Walk (8 Minutes) Slides 6–7
Cap glue sticks ("snap!"), scrap papers into recycle trays. Students complete their Page 2 Shape Detective tally to count how many shapes their house has. Conduct a 2-minute "Neighborhood Walk" to admire peer homes!

Builds house with 2-3 shapes; roof may overlap or door may be placed floating in air. Glues shapes scattered across page without forming a unified house structure. Geometric Identification Accurately identifies and names all 4 shapes used in the house (square, triangle, rectangle, circle). Names 2–3 shapes; may call rectangle a square or need prompt for triangle. Cannot verbally identify the shapes in their house without teacher modeling. Scissor & Glue Technique Cuts within dashed borders; applies controlled glue to corners so shapes stay flat. Cuts somewhat jaggedly; uses heavy glue that puddles or light glue where edges lift. Tears paper when cutting; requires significant physical assistance with scissor hold. Counting & Tallying Correctly counts and writes the total number of circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles on Mat. Counts accurately with teacher one-to-one pointing; needs assistance writing numerals. Guesses count or counts the same shape multiple times.
House Collage Guidance & Quick Fixes
1. "Floating Roof" Phenomenon
Students often glue the triangle roof high up near the top of the paper, leaving no space to attach the walls. Teacher fix: Always guide students to glue the square wall foundation down first, then place the roof like a hat!
2. Doors vs. Windows Placement
Students may glue the door in the center of the wall where it floats. Teacher fix: Remind students that people walk into doors from the ground: "Does your door touch the grass?"
Motor Scaffolding
Provide thick cardstock pre-cut squares and triangles. Draw a light pencil baseline on the creation canvas showing where the house foundation sits.
Language Learners
Pair house parts with picture cards: Casa, Techo (roof), Puerta (door), Ventana (window). Use repetitive oral prompts: "The roof is a... triangle!"
Architect Challenge
Early finishers can stack 2 squares to make a 2-story house or townhouse, cut triangles to make pine trees in the yard, or add a rectangular picket fence.
Family Neighborhood Walk Prompt
Attach to student work: "Dear Families: Today we built shape houses! Take a 5-minute walk around your block tonight and ask your child: 'Can you spot a triangle roof or a circle window on our street?'"
