Lesson Goal
Build coordination, spatial awareness, and auditory-motor synchronization through basic line dance steps.
Key Equipment
Slide deck projector, clear space (gym/studio), and video audio speakers.
National Standard
SHAPE America S1.M1 (Combines locomotor patterns and dance steps in time to music).
Active Cueing & Step Breakdown
Use the following verbal prompts and "scaffolding commands" to coach students through each move. Always count out loud in 8-count increments: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8".
1 The Grapevine (Counts 1 - 4)
Lateral Locomotor
Teacher Prompt Script: "Step side, cross behind, step side, touch and clap!"
Observation Point: Check that students are stepping completely behind their support foot on count 2, not crossing over in front. Keep hips squared.
2 The Pivot Turn (Counts 5 - 8)
Rotational Movement
Teacher Prompt Script: "Step forward, twist your heels, step forward, hold right there!"
Observation Point: Ensure students pivot on the balls of their feet. Pivot over the opposite shoulder from the stepping foot to prevent tripping.
3 The Jazz Box (Counts 1 - 4 of next block)
Geometric Sequence
Teacher Prompt Script: "Cross it over, step it back, step to the side, and home!"
Observation Point: Students should visualize making a box shape with four distinct corners. Make sure they don't drift diagonally.
