Game Changers Lesson Plan
Mixed-Ability Physical Education through the S.T.E.P. Adaptation Model
Duration: 45–60 Min
Focus: Social Inclusion & Movement
Essential Question
"How can changing the rules of a game make sure everybody plays, belongs, and feels challenged?"
Learning Targets (SHAPE Standards 4 & 1)
- • Psychomotor: Demonstrate adaptable movement patterns (rolling, striking, spatial evasion) tailored to personal comfort levels.
- • Affective / Social: Collaborate to select and negotiate fair game rules that support teammates of all physical and sensory abilities.
- • Cognitive: Identify and apply at least two modifications from the STEP framework during station gameplay.
The S.T.E.P. Inclusion Engine
Universal Design for PE
S • Space
Change boundaries, shorten target distances, add neutral safe-zones, adjust net heights.
T • Task
Permit bounces before catching, seated/standing options, modify passing speed or scoring quotas.
E • Equipment
Swap standard balls for chime/bell balls, jumbo balloon balls, ramps, or soft foam paddles.
P • People
Form peer buddy pairs (navigator + mover), designate non-striking anchors, rotate roles evenly.
Phase 1: Mindset & Dynamic Warm-Up (10–12 min)
Whole Class
1. "Motion Mirror" Inclusion Warm-Up (5 min)
Students pair up facing one another. Partner A invents a stationary movement (arm circles, torso twist, seated reach, gentle hop); Partner B mirrors it with whatever variation feels comfortable for their body. Switch roles every 45 seconds. Emphasize that there is no "wrong" way to move.
2. The "Game Leveler" Challenge Demonstration (5 min)
Gather at center circle. Introduce the concept: "A game is only fun when everybody has a real shot at succeeding." Introduce the 4 Station Task Cards and explain that every station has a built-in STEP menu where the group chooses rules that lift everyone up.
Required Equipment Checklist: 4 Task Cards, 12 cones, 4 hula hoops, 2 chime balls, 2 trainer balls/beach balls, 6 foam noodles, 4 floor mats, pinnies.
