The Physics of Light
Lighting is the most powerful tool in a cinematographer’s arsenal. It doesn't just illuminate the subject; it dictates the audience's emotional response. To master the art of lighting, you must control three primary properties:
- Intensity: The brightness of the source. Controlled by wattage, distance (Inverse Square Law), or the use of scrims and dimmers.
- Quality: Refers to the transition between light and shadow. Hard light creates sharp edges; Soft light creates gradual, blurred transitions.
- Color Temp: Measured in Kelvin (K). Daylight is approx. 5600K (Blue); Tungsten/Indoor is approx. 3200K (Orange).
Technical Insight
The Lighting Ratio is the relationship between the Key light and the Fill light. A high ratio (e.g., 8:1) results in deep shadows (Low-key), while a low ratio (e.g., 2:1) creates even, bright illumination (High-key).
The Foundation: 3-Point Lighting

Key Light
The primary source. Placed at 45° to the subject. It defines the main shadows and highlights of the face.

Fill Light
Placed opposite the Key. Reduces the contrast by "filling" shadows. Usually diffused and less intense.

Back Light
Also "Rim" or "Hair" light. Placed behind the subject to create separation from the background.

Triangle Key
Rembrandt Lighting
Characterized by a small triangle of light on the shadowed side of the face. Created by placing the Key light high and to the side, forcing the nose shadow to meet the cheek shadow. It is moody, classic, and deeply dramatic.
Glamour High
Butterfly (Paramount)
The light is placed directly above and behind the camera lens. This creates a symmetrical shadow under the nose resembling a butterfly. It emphasizes high cheekbones and minimizes skin texture.
Shadow Play
Chiaroscuro
Italian for "light-dark." It uses extreme low-key lighting to produce high contrast and heavy shadows. Common in Film Noir, it suggests mystery, hidden motives, or internal conflict.
Practical Sources
Motivated Lighting
Lighting that appears to come from a natural source within the scene (window, fireplace, or a lamp). A Practical is an actual light fixture visible in the frame that "motivates" the off-camera lighting setup.
Director's Note: Diffusion & Wrap
Professional sets rarely point raw lights at actors. To create flattering light, we use Diffusion (silk, frost) or Bouncing (foam boards). The larger the light source relative to the subject, the "softer" the light becomes, wrapping around the face to hide blemishes and soften features.

The Key light should be placed behind the laptop screen, pointing toward the character's face from the same direction as the screen's glow.
Color Temperature:
The color temperature should be 5600K (Daylight / Cool Blue) to accurately simulate the electronic glow of a modern computer display.
Instructor Note:
Encourage students to think about Motivated Lighting. Even if the laptop itself isn't bright enough to light the face, the cinematographer "augments" that reality with an off-camera light source that mimics the laptop's properties.
