Building Belonging Lesson Plan
35 Min (45 Min Period)
Workshop Model • Mixed High School
Curricular Placement: Friday enrichment bridging Pre-Lesson & Lesson 1 into upcoming community-focused work. Reinforces empathy, inclusion, and everyday peer support without introducing formal warning signs or reporting protocols reserved for next week.
Key Objectives
Identify 3+ daily peer actions that build safety, inclusion, and belonging across school settings.
Kagan Cooperative Strategy
Placemat Consensus & RoundRobin : Guarantees 100% participation with individual voice and team agreement.
Materials Needed
Belonging Slides, Activity Placemats (1 per group of 3-4), Exit Tickets, highlighters or pens.
Danielson Framework Alignment
2a & 2b: Environment & Learning Culture: Establishes norms of mutual respect, active listening, and collective responsibility for school emotional climate.
3b & 3c: Discussion & Student Engagement: Kagan structure ensures every student contributes ideas aloud without high-stakes public pressure.
Part 1 • 5 min
Do Now & Warm-Up (Slide 2)
Individual → Pair
Prompt on board: "What is one thing that makes students feel welcome and safe at school?"
Students write 1 sentence or 3 key words on top of their paper (2 min quiet reflection).
Timed Pair Share: Partner A shares for 30 seconds; Partner B shares for 30 seconds.
Teacher cold-calls 2 pairs for quick, affirming shares (1 min).
Part 2 • 7 min
Mini-Lesson: Everyday Actions, Big Impact (Slides 3-6)
Whole Group Interactive
The Big Idea: Safety isn't just physical locks—it is emotional safety, feeling seen, and knowing peers have your back.
The Ripple Effect: Small everyday moments (a nod in the hall, inviting someone to sit, holding the door) compound into school climate.
Boundary Reminder: Clarify that students are never expected to solve complex personal crises alone; today is about positive peer habits and mutual inclusion.
Check for Understanding: Thumbs up/side/down on: "Can a 5-second greeting change someone's day?"

Sentence Starters:
Provide starters: "I can make others feel welcome by..." or "One kind action in the hallway is..."
Low-Stakes Roles:
Pre-assign Kagan table roles: Timekeeper, Scribe, Reader, Encourager so every student has an explicit manageable task.
Emotional Safety:
Keep focus on forward-looking, positive peer behaviors. Explicitly remind students no personal stories of bullying are needed.
