Really Work
Standard markers sit on top of fibers and wash away. Pro-grade fabric markers contain specialized liquid co-polymers and heavy pigments that molecularly bind to cotton threads.

Perfect Stencils,
Zero Bleed-Through
The secret to crisp stenciling is minimizing paper-to-fabric gap and controlling pigment flow. Dragging markers under the edge causes bleeding. Stippling (tapping) locks in boundaries.

Press marker tip up-and-down vertically. Builds crisp edges without pushing ink underneath.
Taping & Weight
Use painters tape around margins. Place steel weights or clean coins along intricate stencil segments.
Edge Calibration

Scribbling hard pushes fibers aside, letting ink leak out of the stencil zone like liquid in tiny straws.

The Magic of
Soda Ash Pre-Soak
Fiber-reactive dyes don't paint fabric; they bond with cellulose fibers on an atomic level. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) acts as a high-pH alkaline catalyst that unlocks cotton molecules, making them join hands with dye molecules permanently.
No Soda Ash = No Color
Without the pre-soak, the dye sits on top and washes out on the first cycle. Always soak for 20 minutes and wring out fully!

1 Mix soda ash: 1 cup per gallon of warm water
2 Submerge shirts completely for 20 minutes
3 Wring out thoroughly (shirt should be damp, not dripping)

The Swirl
Pinch center of shirt with a clothespin and twist clockwise into a tight disc. Wrap 3-4 rubber bands across to divide the disc into pie slices. Apply different colors to each slice.

The Target
Pinch the center of the tee and pull it straight up to create a tube shape. Wrap rubber bands down the length of the tube at regular intervals. Dye each banded section a distinct color.

Scrunch and crumple the shirt into a tight, messy mound. Wrap loosely with rubber bands. Spray random spots with complementary colors to generate organic watercolor clouds.

Dye Spill Response Procedure:
If dye lands on skin, do NOT scrape or use harsh abrasives. Rub area with vegetable oil or baking soda paste, then rinse with soap and water. Remind youth that dye wears off naturally over 2-3 days as skin cells regenerate!

As ice melts slowly over 8-12 hours, lighter, smaller color molecules travel faster and farther, splitting into stunning rings!

Melting Room Setup & Cleanup Blitz
Move drip tubs to safe overnight storage. As ice melts, it carries dyes through fabric. Clean spoons, wipe down powder remnants with damp towels (no sweeping dry dust!).
Critical Ice Dye Control Rules:
If shirts sit directly in the melted dye puddle, they turn muddy brown. **ALWAYS** use mesh cooling grids to elevate the fabric. The melting dye must flow *through* the fabric and drip *away* into the basin below!

2. SPLATTER CONTROL
Over-Tray Squeezing: Never squeeze dye bottles over open tables. Keep shirts centered in plastic grids.
Low Nozzle Press: Keep bottle tip 1 inch away from fabric. Do not squirt dye from high up!
Sealed Transfers: Move dyed items directly from mesh grids into Ziploc bags. Wipe drops immediately.
3. POWDER DUST PROTOCOL
No Fans Active: Turn off all window and table fans before opening dry powder jars.
Damp Towel Cleanup: Never dry sweep spilled powder. Use a damp microfiber cloth to trap particles.
No Blowing/Breathing: Never blow on dry powder or ice mountains to adjust dye spread.

Math Guided Blades:
Why Vectors Matter
Unlike photos made of millions of tiny squares (pixels), vinyl cutters require SVGs (Scalable Vector Graphics). Vectors are mathematical paths. The cutting machine reads these coordinate points to guide its tiny blade with absolute precision.
Infinite Scaling, No Blur
You can stretch a vector from 1 inch to the size of a billboard and it will remain perfectly sharp and crisp.
Designing for Cutters
1 Use solid, thick shapes instead of thin lines
2 Avoid textures, overlaps, or loose brush strokes

What is Weeding?
Extracting Negative Space
Vinyl cutters cut the boundary lines, but do not remove the background. "Weeding" is the process of using a fine steel hook to pull away the negative (waste) vinyl, leaving only your brand graphic on its clear carrier sheet.
Anchor & Pull
Pierce waste vinyl in a safe corner. Pull slowly at a low 45° angle to prevent tearing delicate design segments.
Save the "Islands"
Be incredibly careful inside letters like "O", "A", and "B". Don't pull out the centers (islands) of those shapes!
Weeding Best Practices
Contrast Backlight
Use a tablet screen as a makeshift light box or sit near windows so cut lines show up brightly under high reflection.
Weeding Borders
Add a "weeding box" border around your design in the software. It breaks down the trash vinyl into smaller, easier-to-peel squares!

Cutter Blade Troubleshooting:
If the blade tears the vinyl instead of cutting cleanly, it is either too dull or clogged with vinyl adhesive residues. Remove blade assembly, click the top plunger to expose blade tip, and poke it into a ball of aluminum foil 10 times to clean and hone it!

The Peeling Stage & Hanger Storage
Determine peeling instructions: Standard (Hot Peel slowly) vs. Metallic (Cold Peel completely cool). Shake shirt to cool. Turn off presses, count tools, execute studio cleanup.
What if the Vinyl lifts up?
If you begin to peel the carrier and the vinyl edges lift with it, do NOT keep peeling! Lay the carrier back down immediately, cover with a Teflon sheet, double-check that your pressure knob is set firmly, and press for an additional 5 seconds.

1. BURN PREVENTION
Red Bound Boundary: Only one student is allowed inside the red floor-tape zone at any time.
Top Platen Hazard: The upper heating plate is extremely hot (305°F+). NEVER touch it with bare hands.
Double-Grip Lift: Always hold the press handle with a firm, two-handed grip when locking or lifting.
2. WEEDING TOOL RULES
Cap the Hook: Always slide the protective safety cap back over weeding hooks when not actively weeding.
Flat-Surface Pull: Always weed on a flat, solid table. Do not weed vinyl held in your lap!
Point Away: Pierce vinyl by pointing the hook away from your holding hand. Protect your fingers!
3. PRESS CALIBRATION
Pre-Press Steam Lock: Clamp every blank shirt for 5 seconds to evaporate hidden thread moisture.
Teflon Protection: Always lay a clean Teflon sheet over your graphic before clamping down.
Squeeze Alignment: Push collars and thick seams off the rubber platen to keep pressure perfectly flat.
4. DISMISSAL PROTOCOL
Power Verification: Ensure the red toggle switch is clicked off and screen lights are dark.
Clamp Open: Leave the press open and jaw unlocked when powering down to allow proper venting.
Hook Inventory: All weeding picks must be placed back into the steel magnetic holding dock.
