Festive Footsteps
Creative Movement Lesson Plan • Grade Levels: K-5 (Adaptable)
Duration: 45 Mins
Focus: Winter Holidays Around the World
Lesson Vision & Objective
This lesson introduces elementary students to safe creative movement while celebrating cultural connections. By transforming symbolic traditions from six distinct holidays into physical pathways, levels, and weight changes, students will establish choreography foundations for a winter showcase.
Essential Question
"How can we use our bodies as instruments to tell story-dances from different winter celebrations?"
Key Dance Concepts
- Pathways: Straight, zigzag, circular, spiral
- Levels: High (reaching), Medium, Low (grounded)
- Relationships: Unison, mirroring, call-and-response
- Dynamics: Floating, stamping, sharp, sustained
1 Warm-up: The Candle Spark
8 Mins
Setup: Students begin seated in a wide circle. Lower the lights if possible.
Cues: "Imagine a single spark of warm light in the center of your body. Take a deep breath in and let that warm light slowly expand to your shoulders... your elbows... down to your fingers. Let's make small, slow floating circles with our hands."
Physical Focus: Gentle stretching, rolling wrists/shoulders, level changes (rising to high-reach, folding into deep tuck), and setting a shared tempo.
2 Exploration A: Community & Procession
12 Mins
Focusing on Las Posadas (Mexico/Latin America) and Kwanzaa (African-American). These traditions teach children the power of moving as a cooperative community.
Las Posadas: Processions
Concept: Traveling as a unified family in search of shelter (community walk).
Prompts: Walk in a slow, respectful caravan. Keep arms soft, bent in front as if holding a steady candle. Form couples, mirror your partner, and complete clean 4-count turns.
Kwanzaa: Rhythmic Unity
Concept: Grounded folk stepping to drum rhythms (community strength).
Prompts: Place hands flat on hips. Perform structured footwork: step-stomp, step-stomp. Stay low to the earth (grounded level). Group up to strike dynamic shapes representing the 7 Principles.

Explorations B & C, Cool-Down, and Showcase Choreography Strategy
Part II
3 Exploration B: Sparkle & Spiral Groupings
12 Mins
Focusing on Diwali (Hinduism) and Hanukkah (Judaism). These traditions focus on celebrating light emerging from darkness through concentric geometric circles and energetic shapes.
Diwali: Light Mudras & Circles
Concept: Spiraling patterns and beautiful blooming hands (Rangoli & Diya lamps).
Prompts: Hold your fingers open like flickering oil lamps (Alapadma mudra hand shapes). Form tight circular rings. Leap lightly towards the center of the ring, reach up high, then step backwards, sinking down low.
Hanukkah: Energetic Folk Lines
Concept: Dynamic spinning and communal circle step-weaves (the Hora & Dreidels).
Prompts: Interlace hands/shoulders in flat lines. Take continuous side-cross steps (grapevines). Break apart into individual spins, winding down slowly like a spinning toy falling on its side.
4 Exploration C: Nature's Folk Patterns
8 Mins
Focusing on Winter Solstice (Ancient/Nature) and Christmas (Christian). Exploring cold weather, patterns, tree symmetry, and mechanical, rhythmic patterns.
Solstice: Frost & Nature
Concept: Exploring stillness, growth, and icy dynamic shifts.
Prompts: Freeze into twisted shapes like frozen, leafless winter trees. Feel the wind blow: melt slow and liquid, then pop up and snap instantly into frozen statues.
Christmas: Folk & Nutcrackers
Concept: Symmetrical group shapes and crisp, mechanical folk movement.
Prompts: Link hands to form a decorative winter wreath circle. Transition into sharp, angular robot-like steps resembling marching wooden nutcrackers or mechanical dolls.
5 Cool-down: Embers of the Hearth
5 Mins
Gather students back in a comfortable circle. Instruct them to place their hands on their chest, closing their eyes to focus on deep breathing. Guide slow side-to-side torso sways, breathing in for 4 counts, holding for 4 counts, and releasing for 4 counts.
Dec Showcase Pacing Strategy
Building the Show: Over the next 4 weeks, have the class select 2 of their favorite cultural movement styles from today. Expand these styles into an 8-count phrase. In December, combine these phrases with the class "candle warm-up" and "solstice freeze shape" into a 3-minute performance. Keep formations simple (lines or a big circle) for stress-free spacing.
