THE ELASTIC BODY
Lesson 1: Physical Expression, Safety, & Space Control
TARGET AGE K-2 GRADE
Duration
45 Minutes
Focus Tool
The Body
Drama Skills
Control, Poses
Core Objectives
• Define "Body" as an actor's core physical tool.
• Create a "Magic Shield" (safe personal bubble).
• Express 3+ superhero powers using body shape only.
Materials Needed
• Elastic Body Slides (L1 Visuals)
• Superhero Pose Cards (Printout)
• tambourine, bell, or drum (sound cue)
WARM-UP The Super Shake-Down
5 MINS
Prepare students physically by awakening their limbs and focusing their attention through controlled shaking.
Instructions:
Have students stand in a circle with "one helper arm" length between them.
Shake right hand 8 times, then left hand 8 times, right leg 8 times, left leg 8 times.
Count down from 8, then repeat the sequence for 4 counts, then 2 counts, then 1 energetic shake!
End in "Neutral Actor Pose" (feet hips-width, arms at sides, eyes on teacher, silent and ready).
ACT I The Magic Shield (Space & Safety)
10 MINS
Establish critical safety norms for creative drama. Students learn to navigate space without touching objects or classmates.
The Scripted Prompt:
"Every superhero needs a protective shield to stay safe! Reach your arms out wide. Spin around slowly. This is your personal Magic Shield bubble. If you touch another superhero or a wall, your shield pops! Let's practice moving through space safely without popping our shields."
Safety Practice:
Start walking in slow motion. On your drum beat or bell ring, they must instantly freeze in their shield space without falling over.
UNIT: EVERYDAY SUPERHEROES PAGE 1/2 DRAMA K-2
ACT II Elastic Hero Poses
15 MINS
Explore levels (high, medium, low) and body shapes (stretchy, wide, narrow, heavy) to build character expressiveness.
Step 1: Levels & Shapes Exploration
Instruct students to stretch wide (Super Wide), melt down to the floor (Super Low), stand on tiptoes reaching up (Super High), and curl into a tiny ball (Super Tiny).
Step 2: Introducing the Hero Poses
Introduce 3 core superhero characters. Have students mimic the physical properties of each:
The Rubber Band: Super flexible, stretchy arms, curved torso, wide open legs.
The Iron Wall: Heavy, strong, deep stance, closed fists, rigid muscles.
The Speeding Arrow: Tall, narrow, sharp lines, hands pointed high, standing on one foot.
ACT III Superhero Statues Game
10 MINS
A game of focus, control, and reaction. Students practice moving through space in character and freezing immediately on cue.
How to Play:
When the music plays, students creep/fly/stomp around the room in character.
When the music stops (or teacher calls "FREEZE STATUE!"), they freeze into a perfect superhero shape.
The "Statues Inspector": Teacher walks around to test statues by gently waving near them. Statues must remain perfectly still—no laughing, wobbling, or talking!
If a statue moves, they have to run 3 quick "Super-Jumping-Jacks" in their magic bubble to charge their battery and join back in!
Reflection Questions
1. "How did you use your body to show you were strong without talking?"
2. "Why is it important to keep our Magic Shield safe during drama?"
3. "What level did you feel most powerful in (High, Medium, or Low)?"
Differentiation Tips
Simplify: Focus only on HIGH vs LOW levels. Limit to two hero options (Heavy wall vs Stretchy band).
Extend: Challenge students to change their facial expressions to match their poses (e.g., determined face, energetic face).

WARM-UP The Siren & Humming Bees
10 MINS
Warm up vocal cords and facial muscles gently to prevent straining or shouting during projection practice.
Part 1: The Sonic Siren (Pitch Warm-Up)
Have students mimic a rescue helicopter siren by making an "Oooh!" sound, gliding their pitch from low (floor) to high (ceiling) and back down, matching their hands gliding up and down.
Part 2: The Articulating Bees (Clarity Warm-Up)
Have students buzz their lips saying "Bzzzz!" on a hum. Shake up their cheeks and make a motorboat sound "Prrrr!" to wake up lips and teeth.
ACT I The Sonic Dial (Volume Dynamics)
12 MINS
Introduce the concept of volume control. Teach students how to project their voices safely from their belly, rather than screaming from their throat.
The volume levels to introduce:
Level 1 (Secret Agent Whisper): No throat voice, pure breathy whisper.
Level 2 (Indoor Hero): Conversational, normal speaking volume.
Level 3 (Super Classroom): Energetic, louder than conversational but safe.
Level 4 (Stage Projection): Loud, clear, deep breath from the belly, projects to back of auditorium.
Level 5 (Scream - DO NOT USE): Hurts the throat, not safe for professional actors.

THE SONIC SIREN!
Actors need to warm up their voices before speaking on stage. Let's make a rescue siren glide!
1. GLIDE UP
Say "Oooh!" as you reach your hands high to the sky, making your voice super high-pitched.
2. GLIDE DOWN
Bring your hands down to the floor, sliding your voice low like a heavy rumbling motor.
3. THE BUZZ
Buzz your lips like a fast superhero jet: "Bzzzz! Prrrr!"
LESSON 2: THE VOICE VOICES WARMED UP AND READY!
ACTOR TOOLS SLIDE 2/4
YOUR SECOND TOOL IS THE VOICE
Actors use their voice to express emotions, share ideas, and make sure everyone in the theater can hear the story!
