Defining Polyrhythm
Layered Beats
The simultaneous use of two or more conflicting rhythmic patterns that are not readily perceived as derived from one another.
Polyrhythmic Tension
Created when rhythmic layers cross, creating a "shimmering" effect where the listener can hear different grooves at once.
The "Central Clock"
Usually maintained in the lower body (feet), while ornamentation happens in the upper body (torso/arms).
The Grounded Signature
In many West African and Diaspora dance forms, the relationship to the floor is active and gravitational.
