Anatomy of a Complete Beat
The 4 Studio Layers

Beat Sequencer
Bassline
808 sub or bass guitar locking with the kick to drive low-end weight.
Smart Bass / Loops
Harmonic Body
Chords, electric piano, or synths establishing musical mood and key.
Smart Keyboard
Ear Candy
Vocal chops, risers, and sound textures keeping the ear excited.
Apple Loops / FX
Producer Rule: Avoid clutter! Each layer must inhabit its own sonic frequency range.

Audio Quality
The Producer's Mix Checklist
Prevent Digital Clipping
1. Volume Balancing
Keep Kick and Snare at the front. Lower synths and pads by 3 to 6 dB so drums punch through cleanly.
Master stays green/yellow
2. Stereo Panning
Keep Kick & Bass center. Pan hi-hats slightly left and melodic ear candy slightly right for a wide 3D stage.
Creates headphone width
3. Clean Dropouts
Drop the drum beat on Bar 8 Beat 4. One beat of silence right before the drop creates massive sonic impact.
Silence creates impact
If your master meter hits red, lower individual track faders, not just headphones!

Learning Objectives (SWBAT):
• Program an original 16-step rhythmic drum groove with kick, snare, and hi-hats.
• Layer 4 distinct frequency tiers (drums, bassline, harmonic chords, melodic lead).
• Arrange a 16-bar composition with clear sections (Intro, Groove, Drop, Outro).
• Apply basic mix techniques (fader balance, stereo panning, preventing clipping).
Recommended Lesson Pacing (60-Minute Model)
| Time | Phase | Teacher Facilitation & Student Actions |
|---|
| 00–10m | Hook & Audio Deconstruct | Project Slide 2. Play a popular instrumental snippet. Ask: "Which instrument controls the heartbeat? Where do you hear the snare?" Hand out Worksheet. |
| 10–22m | Live DAW Demo | Screen-mirror GarageBand. Model opening Beat Sequencer, placing Kick on 1/9, Snare on 5/13, adding hi-hats. Demonstrate drag-and-drop of Apple Loops. |
| 22–47m | Independent Studio Lab | Students work with headphones. Step 1: Complete Worksheet Blueprint. Step 2: Sequence drums. Step 3: Build 16-bar arrangement. Teacher circulates for targeted support. |
| 47–55m | Peer Review & Showcase | Students swap headphones with elbow partner for 3 minutes to complete Section 5 on worksheet. Play 2 spotlight beats over studio monitors. |
Essential GarageBand Controls
- Split Region: Move playhead > Tap region > Split > Swipe down on scissor icon.
- Track Header: Swipe right on track icons to reveal Solo, Mute, Volume faders.
- Quantize: Track Settings > Quantization > 1/16 Note (snaps notes to grid).
- Loop Length: Tap '+' icon in top right to extend section from 8 to 16 bars.
Roadblocks & Fast Classroom Fixes
- Red clipping meter: Student stacked too many loud loops. Lower individual track faders to -3dB.
- Loop sounds off-key: Filter Apple Loops by key or change Project Key Signature to match loop.
- Check iPad headphone jack / Bluetooth disconnect; ensure Track Mute is off.
