Radical Roots

A 5-lesson sequence for 7th-grade students focused on decoding Mandarin Chinese characters through semantic radicals. Students learn to identify nature and human-related components, understand compound character logic, and use radical-based systems for information retrieval.

Nature Radicals

Students investigate common semantic radicals related to the natural world, such as water, wood, fire, and earth. They categorize characters based on these visual indicators to guess their thematic meanings.

Human Radicals

Focusing on radicals for person, mouth, hand, and heart, students role-play the meanings associated with these components. They learn to distinguish between physical actions and emotional states in writing.

Character Math

Students treat characters as puzzles, breaking them into 'Radical + Component' structures. They practice 'character math' (e.g., Tree + Tree = Forest) to understand logical compounding.

Dictionary Skills

Learners use their knowledge of radicals to look up characters in a traditional dictionary or digital app. They learn the process of counting strokes in the non-radical component.

Radical Project

Students create a visual 'Radical Tree' or poster that groups high-frequency characters under their governing radicals. They present their findings on how meaning is distributed across the language.
