Lesson 1: The Architecture of Formal Chinese
Advanced Mandarin Characters: Formal Register
Register Comparison
Colloquial (Kouyu)
“我们要去商场买点东西。”
Wǒmen yào qù shāngchǎng mǎi diǎn dōngxī.
Formal (Shumianyu)
“拟前往商场购买物资。”
Nǐ qiánwǎng shāngchǎng gòumǎi wùzī.
What changed? Notice the shift from 2-character words to 1-character roots.
Why Monosyllabic?
Brevity & Density
Formal Chinese values "saving ink." One character replaces two, increasing informational density.
Classical Roots
Formal registers lean into Classical Chinese (Wenyanwen) grammar where single characters function as words.
Authority
Precise, single-character lexemes establish a tone of detachment and professionalism.
"Language is the dress of thought."
— Samuel Johnson
In Mandarin, the formal register is the "tuxedo" of the language.

The Problem: Oral Carryover
When writing articles based on interviews, students often default to Kouyu (colloquial) structures.
This makes formal reports sound "too much like talking" (口语化), which undermines authority.
Common Mistakes
Using "然后" (Then) repeatedly
Keeping filler words like "那个"
Bi-syllabic colloquial verbs
The 4-Step Filter
01
Stripping
Remove all filler words and personal pronouns.
02
Lexical Swap
Replace 2-char words with 1-char formal roots.
03
Connective Art
Use '及', '此', '鉴于' to create logical flow.
04
Nominalization
Turn verbal phrases into formal noun objects.
Interview Quote (Kouyu)
“我们那个时候就是想把技术卖给一些大的公司,但是那个时候没人相信我们。”
Formal Report (Shumianyu)
“彼时拟向大企业转让技术,然遭各方质疑。”
