Lesson 1: Estar and Basic Emotions
60 Minutes
Learning Objectives
Conjugate estar in the singular forms (yo, tú, él/ella).
Identify and use high-frequency emotion adjectives.
Apply gender agreement rules for adjectives ending in -o/-a.
Materials Needed
• Estar and Emotions Slide Deck
• Emoji Decoder Worksheet (1 per student)
• Student Notebooks
• Optional: Physical emojis on popsicle sticks
Lesson Flow
1
The Hook: Emoji Strings (10 mins)
Display the "Hook" slide. Ask students to shout out what they think the emojis represent in English. Gradually encourage them to think of the Spanish equivalents if they know them. Introduce the concept: Today we learn to "code" our feelings into Spanish.
2
Direct Instruction (20 mins)
Use the slides to introduce estar . Emphasize that *estar* is for temporary conditions (feelings). Use TPR (Total Physical Response) for the vocab: have students act out "enojado", "triste", etc., while repeating the words.
TEACHING TIP: The "How you feel and where you are, always use the verb ESTAR" rhyme helps students remember its function.
3
Independent Practice (25 mins)
Distribute the Emoji Decoder Worksheet . Walk around the room, specifically checking for gender agreement on "enojado/a" and "cansado/a".
Answer Key: Emoji Decoder
Item 1 (Woman + Happy):
Ella está feliz.
Item 2 (Man + Angry):
Él está enojado.
Item 3 (Woman + Tired):
Ella está cansada.
Item 4 (Man + Nervous):
Él está nervioso.
Note: "Feliz" and "Triste" do not change gender. "Tranquilo", "Cansado", "Nervioso", and "Enojado" must match the gender of the subject icon (Man/Woman).

Learning Objectives
Distinguish between estar (conditions) and tener (idiomatic needs).
Express hunger, thirst, and temperature in Spanish.
Simulate a medical consultation using high-frequency symptoms.
Prep Work
• Physical States Slide Deck
• Nurse Office Activity (1 per student)
• Props (optional): White coat, stethoscope, play food.
Lesson Flow
1
The Hook: Diagnosis Game (10 mins)
Display the hook slide. Call up a volunteer. Whisper a condition to them (e.g., "thirsty"). The student acts it out without speaking. The class must yell "¡Tiene sed!" or "¡Tengo sed!". Correct grammar on the fly.
2
Direct Instruction: Estar vs. Tener (15 mins)
Use the slides to explain the grammar shift. It is crucial to explain that in Spanish, hunger/thirst are things you possess , not qualities you are . Emphasize that "hambre" and "sed" do not change to -o/-a based on the speaker.
3
Independent & Partner Practice (35 mins)
Students complete Parte 1 of the worksheet individually. Then, they find a partner to practice the role-play in Parte 2. Invite 2-3 pairs to perform their "Medical Emergency" for the class.
Answer Key: Diagnóstico
Item 1 (Fever/Nausea):
Yo estoy enfermo / enferma.
Item 2 (Thinking of burger):
Yo tengo hambre.
Item 3 (Shivering):

Item 4 (Yawning):

Learning Objectives
Use intensifiers (muy , un poco ) to provide emotional nuance.
Identify and produce antonyms for high-frequency emotion adjectives.
Analyze character development through an "emotional journey" lens.
Media Prep
Choose a silent short film (4-8 mins). Suggestions:

• "The Present" (Jacob Frey)
• "Ormie the Pig" (Arc Productions)
Lesson Flow
1
Direct Instruction: Nuance (15 mins)
Use the slides to introduce *muy* and *un poco*. Explain that *muy* comes before the adjective. Introduce the antonym pairs. Do a quick "Opposite Recall" drill: You say "feliz", they shout "triste".
2
The Screen & Plot (30 mins)
Distribute the Character Emotion Graph Worksheet . Play the short film once for enjoyment. Play it a second time, pausing at key transition points (the "inciting incident", the "climax"). Ask: "¿Cómo está ahora? ¿Un poco enojado o muy enojado?". Students plot points on the graph.
3
Written Analysis (15 mins)
Students complete Parte 2 of the worksheet, writing sentences that explain the graph. Encourage them to use intensificadores for extra points.
Common Misconceptions
1. Placement of "Muy": Students might say "feliz muy". Remind them it follows the same order as English "very happy".
2. Adjective Agreement with "Muy": Remind students that "muy" is an adverb and doesn't change gender (no "muya"), but the adjective it modifies must still match the subject.
