Emotions Lesson Teacher Guide Faces of Emotion
Lesson 1: Feliz, Triste, Enojado
Level: 2nd Grade
Objective
Students will identify and express three basic emotions (feliz, triste, enojado) in Spanish through music, facial expressions, and TPR.
Materials
Emotion Faces Slides
Emotion Mirrors Worksheet
Class set of handheld mirrors
Speakers and a variety of music clips
1
The Hook: Music Moods (5-7 mins)
Play three distinct clips of music (upbeat/happy, slow/melancholy, intense/fast). After each clip, ask students to show you a face that matches the music.
"How does this music make your face feel? Don't use words, just your face!"
2
Direct Instruction: Vocabulary (10 mins)
Use the Emotion Faces Slides to introduce the three vocabulary words.
Feliz: Smile big and jump up and down.
Triste: Pout and wipe a pretend tear.
Enojado: Cross arms and stomp once.
Tip: Use exaggerated facial expressions and encourage students to mirror you.
3
Activity: Mirror Work (15 mins)
Hand out the Emotion Mirrors Worksheet . If available, give students handheld mirrors to look at their own expressions.
Students draw their faces for each emotion and practice tracing the words. Walk around and ask individuals: "¿Cómo estás?" (How are you?) prompting them to reply with the word they are drawing.
4
Game: Las Estatuas (10-15 mins)
Play music and have students dance. When the music stops, they must freeze. Call out ¡Feliz!, ¡Triste!, or ¡Enojado!.
Students must freeze in a pose and face representing that emotion. Any "statues" that move or make the wrong face are "melted" and sit down until the next round.
