Place a large lump of clay inside an opaque bag. Pass it around or have select students reach in without looking.
Prompts: "How heavy is it?", "Is it squishy like a marshmallow or hard like a rock?", "If it were an animal, what would it feel like?"

Step-by-Step Actions:
Squeeze: Encourage using whole hand strength. Note how it captures finger imprints.
Roll: Demonstrate rolling between palms for a sphere and on the mat for a "snake."
Flatten: Use the heel of the hand to press down. Introduce the term "slab."
Tear: Show that clay can be separated but also rejoined easily.
Students should use the Clay Action Log to document these movements. Circulate and ask students to describe the sensations (sticky, cold, smooth).

Dust Prevention
Clay dust can be an irritant. Always use damp sponges for cleanup rather than sweeping dry crumbs. Never use a broom on clay dust!
The "No-Sink" Rule
Clay clogs drains instantly. Use a bucket of water for the first hand-wash, then the sink for a final rinse. Change bucket water frequently.

Lesson 3: Building Height • Grade 2
Technique Focus
Objective
Students will roll uniform coils of clay and utilize the stacking and blending method to create a vessel with a minimum height of 3 inches.
1 Demonstration (15 min)
The "Snake" Technique: Show students how to use flat hands and move from the center outwards. Explain that "fingers like sausages" (spread out) create lumps, while flat palms create smooth coils.
The Foundation: Demonstrate creating a circular slab base using the Flatten technique from Lesson 1.
Critical Check:
Show what happens if you don't blend the inside—the coils pop off like a stack of donuts!
2 Guided Practice (30 min)
Students use the Coil Practice Mat to roll their foundation and first 3 coils.
Monitor for "flat" coils (caused by too much pressure).
Ensure students are stacking the coil directly on top of the wall, not inside or outside it.
Check that the interior blending is thorough.

Assessment Tool
Criteria Developing Proficient Mastery Scoring (Scratch) Surface is barely marked or marked only on one piece. Scratches are too shallow. Visible "tic-tac-toe" scratches on both pieces to be joined. Deep, crisscrossed texture on both pieces that clearly creates "tooth" for the join. Slipping (Glue) Slip is absent or applied so thinly it dries before joining. Adequate amount of slip applied to the scored area. Slip is worked into the scratches, creating a creamy "glue" layer. Joining (The Wiggle) Pieces are merely set next to each other. Gaps are visible. Pieces are pressed together. Some "wiggle" was likely applied. Pieces are firmly integrated. A small bead of slip squeezed out during the "wiggle." Smoothing (The Seam) A deep crack or line remains visible where the two pieces meet. The seam is mostly smoothed over with fingers or a tool. The seam is completely invisible. The two pieces appear as one continuous form.

The Texture Stations

Critical Drying Steps
Hollow Forms
Ensure any closed forms (like a hollow ball for a head) have a small air hole poked into them. Trapped air will expand in the kiln and cause an explosion.
The Bottom Line
Ensure names are carved deeply into the bottom. As clay shrinks (approx. 10-15%), shallow names may disappear.

Firing & Glazing
Bone Dry: Clay must be completely dry (room temperature to the touch, no longer cold) before firing. This usually takes 5-7 days depending on humidity.
Bisque Fire: Fire to Cone 04-06.
Glaze: For 2nd grade, "Stroke & Coat" style glazes are most successful. Remind students that glaze is like magic—the color in the jar doesn't always match the color after the kiln!
