Activity Overview
Students will use the Genealogy Tree Worksheet and the Genealogy Character Cards . You will read the clues below. Students must identify the character for the family title and the character(s) for the age, then place them in the correct spots on the tree.
The Clues (Read aloud in Pinyin)
Clue 1: The Father
"Bàba sìshí suì." (爸爸四十岁)
Translation: Dad is 40 years old. (Place 爸爸 and 四十 in the left parent node).
Clue 2: The Mother
"Māma sānshíbā suì." (妈妈三十八岁)
Translation: Mom is 38 years old. (Place 妈妈 and 三十八 in the right parent node).
Clue 3: The Eldest Child
"Gēge shí'èr suì." (哥哥十二岁)
Translation: Big brother is 12 years old. (Place 哥哥 and 十二 in the far-left child node).
Clue 4: The Second Child
"Jiějiě shí suì." (姐姐十岁)
Translation: Big sister is 10 years old. (Place 姐姐 and 十 in the second child node).
Clue 5: The Third Child
"Dìdi qī suì." (弟弟七岁)
Translation: Little brother is 7 years old. (Place 弟弟 and 七 in the third child node).
Clue 6: The Youngest
"Mèimei wǔ suì." (妹妹五岁)
Translation: Little sister is 5 years old. (Place 妹妹 and 五 in the far-right child node).
Pacing Tips:
Read each clue twice. The first time, students should find the characters. The second time, they should verify placement.
Walk around to ensure students are identifying "Sìshí" (40) vs "Shísì" (14) correctly.
Encourage students to "whisper-read" the characters back to themselves to reinforce the auditory link.
