Emotion Beats Lesson Plan
Expressing Feelings & Self-Regulation Through Rhythm, Tempo, and Movement
Standard Target PK.CA.2
Target Age 4 Years (Pre-K)
Total Duration 35 Minutes
Group Format Circle & Movement Rug
Core Focus Music, Movement, SEL
Standard & SEL Competency
TN-ELDS PK.CA.2: Investigate and identify rhythm, tempo (fast/slow), and dynamics (loud/soft); participate in music and creative movement to express thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences.
• CASEL: Self-Awareness (Emotions) • Self-Management (Body Control)
Authentic Real-World Hook
Children become sound designers creating a "Living Peace-Corner Soundtrack". They compose mood movements and sounds so classmates can use these rhythms whenever they feel angry, tired, excited, or sad.
• Meaningful outcome: Co-created peace corner music cues
Measurable Learning Objectives & Child-Friendly "I Can" Language
Teacher Instructional Goal
Learners will demonstrate changes in musical tempo (fast/slow) and dynamics (loud/soft) using scarves and gross motor movements to embody at least 3 distinct emotions, freezing on cue.
Child "I Can" Statements
- "I can move my scarf fast for excitement and slow for calm."
- "I can show happy, stormy, and peaceful with my body."
- "I can freeze like a statue when the rhythm chime rests."
Sensory & Movement Tools
1 lightweight silk scarf per child, 1 hand drum/djembe, 1 meditation chime.
Visual Scaffolds
4 Large Emotion/Weather Cards: Sunny/Happy, Stormy/Angry, Breeze/Calm, Spark/Excited.
Space Arrangement
Rug cleared. Taped visual "movement spots" 3 feet apart for personal space bubbles.
Novice Teacher Criteria for Success (Observational Look-Fors)
Assess during Guided Exploration & Application
| Skill Dimension | 1. Emerging | 2. Developing | 3. Proficient |
|---|
| Tempo & Dynamics | | | |
| Drum beat response | Moves at one constant speed; ignores drum beat tempo changes until hand-guided. | Alters movement speed when teacher models "fast tiptoes" or "slow crawls." | Immediately syncs body speed and scarf velocity to drum beats without visual prompt. |
| Emotional Expression | | | |
| Connects feeling to dance | Copies peers randomly; cannot name or physically show feeling differences. | Matches movement when looking at visual card (e.g., stomps for "stormy"). | Generates expressive gestures (soaring arms for joy, gentle waves for calm) & explains feeling. |
| Self-Regulation & Safety | | | |
| Body control & freeze | Bumps into others or continues moving after chime sound stops. | Stops after 2-3 extra steps or when looking at frozen peers; stays in rough zone. | Freezes statue-still immediately upon hearing chime; preserves personal space bubble. |

Facilitation Script & Pacing
Step-by-Step Instructional Delivery
35 Mins Total Novice Teacher Scripted
1
Spark & Warm-Up: The Feeling Heartbeat (7 Mins)
Focus: Body Awareness & Personal Bubble
Teacher Script (Verbatim)
"Good morning, music detectives! Put both hands on your chest. Can you feel your heartbeat? (thump... thump...) When we wake up slow, our heart plays a quiet, gentle beat. But when we get super excited, what happens? It beats fast: thump-thump-thump-thump! Today, our bodies and our music get to tell our feelings stories!"
Novice Teacher Alert
Establish the Bubble: Have kids reach arms out wide and spin once slowly. "If your fingers touch anyone, take one giant crab-step back!"
2
Explicit Modeling: Meet Fast-Joy & Slow-Peace (8 Mins)
Focus: Tempo + Emotion Link
Teacher Script & Action
"Watch me. I am holding my silk scarf. I am going to tap my drum slow: tap... tap... tap... Look at my scarf floating like a slow, sleepy cloud. My face looks calm and relaxed. Now listen! (Tap fast!) My scarf is fluttering like excited butterflies! My feet are doing fast, joyful tiptoes! Who can tell me: was my first dance happy-excited or sleepy-calm?"
Criteria Look-For
Listen for children using contrast words: "Fast!", "Sleepy!", "Gentle!". Validate that both fast and slow emotions are good and natural to feel.
3
Guided Practice: The Emotion Weather Symphony (10 Mins)
Focus: Active Scarf Movement & Freeze Cue
Facilitation Sequence with Weather Prompts
Round 1: Gentle Sunshine (Calm) Soft, slow humming. Children sweep scarves in giant arches, breathing in and out.
Round 2: Thunderstorm (Frustrated/Mad) Heavy, low stomping on drum. Children shake scarves low to the ground to shake out big energy safely!
Round 3: Rainbow Celebration (Joy) Bouncy, medium-fast rhythm. Children leap gently, toss scarves, and catch them.
The Safety Freeze Rule (Essential for 4-Year-Olds):
"When my chime goes SHIIIIING, freeze your whole body like a statue in an ice castle! Let's practice. 3, 2, 1... Freeze! Look at those still statues!"
4
Authentic Application: Living Peace-Corner Soundtrack (10 Mins)
Focus: Peer Expression & Sound Design
Divide into 2 groups: The Sound Makers (playing egg shakers/rhythm sticks) and The Feeling Dancers (scarves). The teacher holds up the "Peaceful Breeze" picture card. Sound makers shake slowly and softly; dancers glide softly. Then switch roles!
Authentic Product
Teacher records 15-second audio snippets on the tablet to place on the classroom Peace Corner QR-code audio board for future daily calm-downs!

Classroom Management & Support
Novice Teacher "In-the-Moment" Management Guide (When Energy Spikes)
Scenario: Kids Colliding or Running
Do Not: Yell over the music.
Do This: Strike the chime once and drop to one knee with hands on head. Children instinctively match teacher posture. Re-anchor bubbles.
Scenario: Child Reluctant to Move
Do Not: Force them to join the circle.
Do This: Invite them to be the "Sound Conductor" who holds the chime or points to the emotion picture cards from the teacher's side.
Scenario: Wild Scarf Throwing
Do Not: Take the scarf away instantly.
Do This: Give a concrete movement constraint: "Can your scarf dance only as high as your nose? Show me waist-high waves!"
Differentiation for Diverse Pre-K Learners
Sensory / Motor Accommodations
- • Offer noise-dampening earmuffs for sound-sensitive children during drum beats.
- • For children with physical/mobility limitations, seated scarf movements (upper body swaying) achieve full standard mastery.
Multilingual / Dual Language
- • Point directly to visual expression icons (Sunny = Feliz / Happy).
- • Pair all rhythm directives with exaggerated Total Physical Response (TPR) gestures (slow sweeping arms vs. fast tiptoes).
Extension for Advanced Learners
- • Invite advanced children to perform "Opposites": dance slowly to a fast beat or express transition from angry to peaceful in a 2-part dance story.
Cool-Down & SEL Metacognitive Debrief (5 Mins)
Essential Transition Ritual
The "Scarf Blanket & Candle Breath" Routine
Children sit on their spots and lay their silk scarf over their knees like a blanket.
"Smell the flower (deep nose inhale)... now blow gently on your scarf to make a tiny breeze without blowing it off your lap (long slow exhale)." Repeat 3 times to bring heart rates back to baseline.
Novice Reflection Prompts (Ask & Point)
- • "When your body moved slow and soft like rain, how did your inside feel?" (Expect: calm, quiet, cozy).
- • "If you ever feel super stormy or mad at center time, what can you do with your feet or hands to get the big feeling out safely?"
Home-School Authentic Bridge: "Living Room Freeze Dance"
Send home a half-sheet note: "Tonight, ask your child to show you their 'Calm Scarf Breath' and play their favorite song while practicing freezing like statues!"
