The Physiology of Pranayama (Controlled Breathing)
Pranayama is the practice of voluntary breath regulation. Its primary biological function is to actively balance the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
When we practice slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing, we stimulate the Vagus Nerve. The Vagus Nerve acts as a major highway of the nervous system. Stimulating it sends a neural signal to trigger the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS), often called the "rest-and-digest" recovery system. This active shift lowers our heart rate, reduces arterial blood pressure, and shuts down the sympathetic nervous system's "fight-or-flight" response.
