Rainbow Explorers Lesson Plan
Rainbow Explorers
Full Exemplar Lesson Plan • Focus: Colors, Texture & Motor Skills
Target Age 18 - 36 Months
Weekly Developmental Goal
Foster color identification (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green) and hand-eye coordination through immersive multi-sensory color-mixing activities and simple fine-motor operations.
Core Vocabulary
Mix, Bright, Squeeze, Rainbow
Circle Time Morning Hub
1. Greeting: "Hello, Rainbow Friends!"
Sing to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb":
"Welcome friends of red and blue, green and yellow too!..."
2. Book: "What Makes a Rainbow?"
By Betty Ann Schwartz. Touch and feel the colorful ribbon elements as pages turn.
3. Group Play: Rainbow Scarves
Pass out colored chiffon scarves. Prompt toddlers to lift them high like clouds and drop them slow like rainbow rain.
Sensory Bin: Rainbow Rice
Setup & Fillers:
Dry white rice dyed with non-toxic food coloring (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green) layered in a shallow wide bin.
Tools Provided:
Clear plastic cups, wood scoops, funnels, and small soft cloud toys (white pom-poms) hidden inside.
Facilitation Question:
"Look! You scooped yellow rice! Can you find a hidden fuzzy cloud?"
Art: Mess-Free Paint bags
Activity Setup:
Squeeze a dollop of Blue paint and Yellow paint directly into a sealable Ziploc freezer bag. Tape all four edges of the bag securely to the tabletop.
How Toddlers Play:
Toddlers squish, press, and glide fingers over the plastic bag, seeing the blue and yellow colors magically combine into green.
Sensory Feedback:
Tactile squish sensation without sticky fingers! Explores cause-and-effect beautifully.
Teacher Tip: Focus on descriptive praise. Instead of saying "Good job!" try pointing to their action: "Look at how you're using your fingers to push the blue paint into the yellow paint! It's changing!"
Active Skills & Routines
Physical & Cognitive Integration for 'Rainbow Explorers'
Page 2: Full Plan
Fine Motor: Rainbow Loops
Materials Needed:
Brightly colored pipe cleaners (red, yellow, blue) and pool noodle rings or large-holed rigatoni pasta dyed yellow.
Play Method:
Show toddlers how to use their pincer grasp to slide the noodle rings onto the upright pipe cleaners. Encourages concentration and fine finger-pinch skill.
Gross Motor: Cloud Hop
Setup & Play:
Tape large circles of colored construction paper to the floor. Call out a color or step on them to guide children to jump/toddle color to color.
Movement Prompts:
"Let's hop like a bunny onto the Yellow Cloud! Now stretch high like a giant cloud on Red!" Builds dynamic balance.
Cognitive: Cup Match Up
The Problem-Solving Setup:
Place 3 colored plastic cups (Red, Yellow, Blue) in a line. Provide a bowl of colored counting blocks corresponding to those cup colors.
Toddler Objective:
Model dropping a red block into the red cup. Toddlers try to sort blocks into matched cups. Emphasizes matching & categorization.
Social: Toy Sharing Train
Sharing Concept:
During block play, introduce the cooperative "Hand-Over" game. Sing a quick song about passing the color blocks to a friend nearby.
Target Social Prompt:
Help model words: "May I have yellow block, please?" and teaching kids to look at each other while handing blocks over.
Transition & Clean-Up Routine Strategy
Clean-Up "Color Hunt" Song:
To the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle":
"Pick up blue, and yellow too, clean up time for me and you! Put them in our rainbow box!"
Post-Activity Calm Down:
Deep breathing exercise: "Smell the rainbow flower, blow away the rain clouds" (slow breath in, deep blow out) 3 times before transitioning to snack time.
Developmental Markers to Observe
✔ Does child name or reach for colors on command?
✔ Does child use standard pincer grasp on pipe cleaners?
✔ Does child engage in messy play without visual aversion?
