La Palma Folk Art of El Salvador

Cultural Legacy
In the 1970s, artist Fernando Llort moved to the mountain town of La Palma, El Salvador . He taught local villagers how to paint simple, colorful designs of houses, trees, flowers, and animals on small seeds called copinol.
This naive, geometric style transformed La Palma into a bustling artistic community and became a symbol of national hope, peace, and resilience during challenging historical times.

Art Supplies
• White heavy cardstock or wood blocks (5"x7" or 8"x10")
• Pencil and white eraser (for layout)
• Fine-tip black paint pens or permanent markers

PHASE 1: CONTEXT & MOTIFS (15 MIN)
Introduce Fernando Llort
Show students images of La Palma paintings (using the companion slide deck). Discuss how the art features simple, geometric representations of nature and daily life. Point out how houses are layered up the hillside to create depth without traditional perspective.
Guided Drawing Practice
Have students open their Student Handouts . Direct them to practice drawing the 4 essential motifs using simple geometry:
Houses: Squares + triangles
Birds: Oval body + curved beak
Trees: Semicircle top + thick trunk
Sun: Big central circle + simple rays
PHASE 2: PENCIL SKETCHING (15 MIN)
Planning the Landscape
Distribute painting sheets or wooden boards. Instruct students to start sketching their own Salvadoran village scene:
Hillside Baseline: Draw 2-3 gently curving horizontal lines to create hills.The Village: Nest or stack 3-5 simple houses of varying sizes on different hill levels.Flora & Fauna: Add characteristic "lollipop" or "cloud" trees, giant stylized flowers, and a large sun rising in the background.Keep it simple: Remind students that inside details will be painted, so avoid intricate tiny pencil lines.

Part 2: Execution
PHASE 3: SOLID COLORING (20 MIN)
Applying the Palette
Using acrylics or tempera markers, paint each shape with a solid, bold coat of color .
■ No blending: Keep colors flat. No shadows or realistic gradients!
■ Variety: Paint neighboring shapes with different colors to create high-contrast boundaries.
■ Dry Time: Ensure paint is completely flat and dry before the final outline step.
PHASE 4: BLACK OUTLINES (10 MIN)
Defining the Motifs
The signature look of La Palma art is the heavy black outlines that pull the colorful community elements together.
• Use a black paint pen or thick permanent marker.
• Outline every shape carefully to seal the colors.
• Add interior details: simple lines inside leaves, stripes on animal bodies, windows on houses, or simple cartoon eyes.

In 1972, Fernando moved to La Palma and started a community workshop named "La Semilla de Dios" (The Seed of God).
