Creating an 8-Page Mini-Book of Summer Memories • Art & ELA (Grades 2-4)

Materials Needed
8.5" x 11" white copy paper (2 sheets per student), stapler, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers.
Learning Objectives
- Students will construct an 8-page personal narrative mini-book using standard paper stacking and folding.
- Students will craft expressive, colorful illustrations that communicate a specific personal summer memory.
- Students will write 2-3 detailed sentences per memory, incorporating feelings, actions, and locations.
Booklet Construction Guide
Simple Stapled Design

Stack Sheets
Take exactly 2 sheets of white copy paper and stack them perfectly on top of each other.

Fold in Half
Fold the stacked papers together in half widthwise (hamburger-style) and crease well.

Staple Spine
Press the fold flat. Place 2 staples along the folded spine crease to secure the pages.

Name & Number
Write your name on the front cover. Lightly pencil in page numbers 1-8.

Teaching Timeline

Warm-up & Mental Snapshot: Lead students in a guided visualization. Ask them to close their eyes and picture happy moments from summer. Use sensory details: What did you smell? Who was with you? What sounds were there? Introduce the booklet project.
15-30 Min
Booklet Construction Demonstration: Guide students step-by-step through stacking and folding their mini-books. Help students secure their spines with a stapler. Tip: Have them write their names tiny on the "Front Cover" immediately.
30-45 Min
Planning & Scaffolding: Distribute the Student Snapshot Planning Worksheet. Have students brainstorm and write draft sentences for their 6 selected pages. Prompt options are laid out on the student worksheet to guide diverse summer experiences.

Art Production & Writing: Students copy their final, polished draft sentences onto the booklet pages and illustrate. Encourage pencil sketching first, followed by coloring with crayons or colored pencils. Markers are best used just for outlining so they don't bleed through!
75-90 Min
Snapshot Exhibition & Peer Sharing: Group students in pairs or tables of 3-4. Have them "read" their mini-books to each other. Gather as a whole group and select 3 volunteers to show one snapshot page to the class, explaining why they chose that visual style.

- "What color captures the feeling of your happiest summer day? Sun-yellow or ocean-blue?"
- "If you had a quiet memory (like reading or sleeping), how can you show silence in your drawing?"
- "Think about the sounds of summer. How can you draw the sound of water or laughter?"
Management Tips
- Neat Alignments: Stress the importance of aligning edges before folding so pages turn smoothly and evenly.
- Page Sequence: Pre-label page numbers (1-8) softly in pencil on folded booklets so students don't write upside-down or out of order!
- Staple Security: An adult should assist or supervise stapling for younger students (grades 2-3) to ensure fingers are safe.

Differentiation & Accommodations
Support (EL / SpEd)
Allow students to dictate their sentence concepts while a peer or teacher scribes. Provide sentence frames (e.g., "I went to..."). Allow 1 clear descriptive sentence per page instead of 2-3.
Challenge (Extension)
Incorporate sensory adjectives and active verbs (e.g., "sizzling, shimmering"). Add an "About the Author" section on the back cover with a self-portrait sketch and brief bio.
