Grade 1 • Physical Wellness
30 Minutes
Why This Matters
In this lesson, students will learn simple yoga poses that require a partner, promoting physical wellness and trust between classmates. This lesson encourages teamwork, enhances physical coordination, and helps students develop a sense of balance and mindfulness.
Objective
Students will demonstrate at least three partner yoga poses while practicing safe communication and physical cooperation with a peer.
Materials
- Yoga mats (1 per student/pair)
- "Partner Power" Worksheet
- "Together Zen" Slide Deck
Instructional Sequence
1
Introduction (5 mins)
Gather students in a circle on their yoga mats. Briefly explain what yoga is (mindful movement and breathing) and how it helps us feel calm and strong. Introduce the concept of Partner Yoga: working together to find balance.
"Today, we aren't just doing yoga by ourselves. We are going to be like two halves of a puzzle, helping each other stay steady and calm."
2
Demonstration (5 mins)
Use the Together Zen Slides to show images of the poses. Choose a student volunteer to demonstrate 1-2 poses (e.g., Double Tree). Emphasize:
- Safety: No pulling or pushing too hard.
- Communication: Asking "Ready?" or saying "Steady!"
- Focus: Keeping eyes on a steady spot (drishti).
3
Practice (15 mins)
Pair up students and have them spread out. Guide them through the three poses: The Mirror, Double Tree, and Back Chair.
Teacher's Role
- • Walk around and offer gentle help.
- • Remind students to use "whisper voices".
- • Praise teamwork over perfect balance.
Modifications
- • Practice near a wall for stability.
- • Focus on "belly breaths" for calm.
- • Switch partners halfway if needed.
4
Closure (5 mins)
Gather students back in the circle for reflection:
- How did your body feel? (Relaxed, strong?)
- What was the hardest part about working together?
- Share one thing you liked about your partner's help.
Distribute the Partner Power Worksheet for reflection and home practice.
Classroom Management Tips
Breath is Key
If energy gets too high, pause everyone for three collective deep breaths.
Pair Selection
Height matching helps with Double Tree and Back Chair poses.
Safe Space
Ensure enough buffer space between pairs to prevent collisions.
