Warm-Up: Qui Est-ce?
[Teacher]: "Bonjour, la classe! Today we're going to start with a fun warm-up activity. Look at the screen. You see the question: 'Qui est dans ta famille?' Can anyone guess what that means?"
Pause for student responses. Guide them to "Who is in your family?".
[Teacher]: "Excellent! Now, I want everyone to silently think about your family. Who are the people in it? You can draw a picture of one family member on your paper, or just think about one person. Don't show or tell anyone who you picked yet!"
Give students 2-3 minutes to draw/think. Circulate and observe.
[Teacher]: "Okay, pencils down. Now, who would like to share just one thing about the person they thought of? For example: 'My family member loves to cook' or 'They tell funny jokes'."
5-15 MIN
The Vocabulary (Slide Deck)
Slide 1-2
[Teacher]: "Let's get started! This says 'Ma Famille Française!' which means 'My French Family!' How exciting! Now, let's learn how to introduce our family members."
Slide 3: Maman & Papa
[Teacher]: "Look at this picture. In French, we say maman. Can everyone say maman? (mah-MAHN). Repeat it after me: Maman! Maman! Maman!"
[Teacher]: "And for dad, we say papa. Let's try: Papa! (pah-PAH)."
Slide 4: Frère & Soeur
[Teacher]: "A brother is a frère. Practice that 'air' sound: frair. And a sister is a soeur. It sounds like the word 'sir'!"
Slide 5: Grandparents
[Teacher]: "Now for grandmas and grandpas! In French, 'grand' means big. So we have grand-mère (big mother) and grand-père (big father)!"
15-22 MIN
Activity: Family Tree Fun
[Teacher]: "Now we're going to create our own family trees! I'm handing out the 'Dessine Ta Famille' worksheet. Draw your family members and label them with their French names. If you don't have a brother or sister, you can draw a friend, a pet, or leave it blank!"
22-30 MIN
Bingo & Cool-Down
[Teacher]: "Ready for Bingo? I'll call out a French family member. If you have the picture, cover it! First one to get three in a row shouts 'BINGO!'"
[Teacher]: "To finish, tell me your favorite French word today. Mine is 'grand-père' because it sounds so special. What's yours? ... Très bien! Au revoir, la classe!"
