A Day in the City with Mateo / Un día en la ciudad
Reading Passage (Story in English with Spanish Places)
Say the Spanish words aloud as you read!
Hi! My name is Mateo and I am twelve years old. I live in a beautiful, active city full of exciting places. Every Saturday morning, my sister Sofía and I walk our playful dog to el parque [ehl PAHR-keh]. We play frisbee right next to the sunny town square, la plaza [lah PLAH-sah], where people admire the pretty flowers and the big fountain.
Around one in the afternoon, our family gets hungry and meets up at our favorite Mexican restaurante [ehl reh-stow-RAHN-teh]. The chicken tacos, chips, and lemonade are delicious! Right after our meal, my mom and I walk across the street to the busy supermercado [ehl soo-pehr-mehr-KAH-doh] to pick up fresh apples, milk, cheese, and bread for the week ahead.
In the afternoon, Sofía heads to la biblioteca [lah bee-blyoh-TEH-kah] because she loves reading mystery novels in a quiet corner, while Mom visits a trendy downtown clothing tienda [lah TYEHN-dah]. In the evening, our whole family meets at el cine [ehl SEE-neh] to watch an exciting new movie. The theater is located just steps away from the train estación [lah eh-stah-SYOHN] and the city's main hospital [ehl ohs-pee-TAHL]. I love exploring my city!

Pronunciation Modeling Tips for the Teacher
1. La 'H' es muda (Silent H) Remind students that hay sounds like English "eye" and hospital sounds like [ohs-pee-TAHL]. No hard "H" sound!
2. Pure Spanish Vowels A [ah], E [eh], I [ee], O [oh], U [oo]. Keep vowels short and crisp without English diphthong glides (e.g., cine = [SEE-neh], not [SIGH-nee]).
3. Contraction: a + el = al Explain why we say "Voy al parque" but "Voy a la escuela". High-frequency syntax tip!
