¡Hola Amigos!
Kindergarten Spanish Greetings • 35-40 Minute Push-In Lesson
Grade Level: K Focus: Oral & Kinesthetic
Essential Question
How do words help us welcome others and share our feelings with our friends?
Can-Do Statements
- ✔ I can say hello and goodbye in Spanish.
- ✔ I can greet someone based on the time of day.
- ✔ I can show how I feel when greeted.
NYS World Language Standards & SEL Connection
Anchor Standard 1 (Communication): Students use simple, memorized words and gestures (Novice Low) to interact with others.
SEL Core Competency (Relationship Skills & Self-Awareness): Recognizing how greetings build positive connections and acknowledging daily emotional states.
Lesson Materials
- Interactive Projector Slide Deck
- Teacher & Student Puppet Pops
- Visual Emoji Exit Tickets (Half-sheets)
- Popsicle sticks (for puppet backing)
Classroom Prep
Pre-cut character puppet shapes or print them out for coloring. For a small classroom, ensure students have enough personal space to stand up and stretch their arms without leaving their spots.
Small Classroom Push-In Management Tips
Because you are pushing in with limited space, keep movement vertical rather than horizontal. Have students stand in place for movement cues (stretching up, shrinking down) rather than walking around. Keep all physical props small, and use the presentation screen as your primary visual anchor to focus attention.

Instructional Pacing & Scripts (35-40 Mins)
1. Warm-Up & Connection (5 mins) Slide 1
Introduce yourself in Spanish. Read the English EQ: "How do words help us welcome others?" Connect with SEL: ask how a simple smile makes them feel. Teach the word ¡Hola! paired with a simple hand wave.
Teacher Script: "¡Hola, amigos! My name is Senor/Senora... Today, we are learning how to greet our friends all day long. When I wave and say '¡Hola!', can you wave back and say '¡Hola!'?"
2. Interactive Presentation (12 mins) Slides 2-6
Walk through daily greetings using visual slides. Model the physical movement cues to associate language with times of day:
🌅 Buenos días: Sun rises, stretch arms way up high!
☀️ Buenas tardes: Sun high, shade eyes to look around.
🌙 Buenas noches: Sleepy moon, rest head on folded hands.
👋 Adiós: Wave goodbye and blow a quick kiss.
3. Kinesthetic Practice (10 mins) Slide 7
The "El Tiempo del Sol" (Sun Pacing) Game: Use the slides or your printable puppet props to flash different characters (Sun, Moon, Sunglasses, Waves). Students stand in their personal spots and perform the corresponding physical gesture and shout the correct Spanish greeting.
Management Trick: Speed up the transition between prompts. Shifting rapidly from 'Buenos días' (arms high) to 'Buenas noches' (head sleeping) captures kindergarten focus completely and prevents off-task behavior!
4. Assessment & SEL Connection (8 mins) Slide 8 / Ticket
Hand out the visual smiley-face exit ticket. Guide them through coloring or circling the sun/moon to show times of day, and rating their emotional comfort. As they transition out, they high-five a puppet prop or say "¡Adiós!" to you.
Differentiation Strategies
For Emerging Learners: Focus purely on pairing the gesture with the word. Hand gestures bypass language translation barriers.
For Advanced Learners: Encourage full sentence chunks: "Hola, buenos días" or greeting a partner directly.
