Fueling Strategy • 30 Minute Session
v2.0 // PROFESSIONAL_TONE_ENABLED
01
Introduction: Fueling Strategy
Facilitator: "Welcome. Today, we're shifting how we look at food. We're moving away from 'good' vs. 'bad' labels and focusing on Fueling Strategy. This isn't about body image; it's about body function—maximizing your energy, focus, and overall performance."
"Our goal is to treat food as biological information that helps your system run at its best. I'm distributing the Fueling Strategy Note-Catcher. Use this to track the core frameworks we discuss today."
02
The Joy Factor
Facilitator: "First, we have to acknowledge the Joy Factor. Food isn't just fuel; it's a sensory experience and a psychological connection. If a fueling plan ignores what you actually like, it's a failing strategy."
"Think about a food you genuinely enjoy. What's the sensory connection? Is it the texture, the temperature, the memory? Let's quickly go around. Share one food you value and why it works for you."
Coaching Note: Validate all responses. Whether it's a sensory-safe comfort food or a complex dish, affirm that "Satisfaction" is 50% of the strategic balance equation.
03
Nutritional Density
Facilitator: "Now, let's look at the other 50%: Nourishment. We use the term 'Nutritional Density.' This means getting the most biological 'bang for your buck'—foods that pack the most vitamins, minerals, and sustained energy into your system."
"On your Note-Catcher, define Nutritional Density as 'maximizing body function through strategic intake.' We want foods that help us concentrate in class or stay strong during practice."
04
Framework: The Four Pillars
Facilitator: "To simplify this, we use The Four Pillars. These are the building blocks of any high-performance meal."
Protein: Structural support and satiety (Fullness).
Carbs: Primary energy source for brain and body.
Produce: Micronutrients (Vitamins/Minerals) and fiber.
Fats: Brain health, hormones, and nutrient absorption.
"The goal isn't 'perfection' on every plate. It's about Strategic Balance. If you're having pasta (Carbs) and sauce (Produce), what could you add to bring in Protein or Fats for more sustained energy?"
05
Action: Meal Design
Facilitator: "It's time for application. Use the Meal Design Activity sheet. Your task is to analyze a common meal you eat and find one strategic way to optimize it using the Four Pillars. Or, design a high-density meal from scratch."
"As you work, remember: we're looking for Sustainable Momentum. One small, repeatable shift is better than a massive overhaul that you can't maintain. We'll wrap up with the Strategic Momentum exit ticket."
Fueling Strategy Lesson Plan Fueling Strategy Lesson Plan
Topic: High-Performance, Body-Neutral Nutrition (9th Grade)
Tier 2 Support
30 Minutes Small Group (4-6 Students)
Strategic Objectives
The Why
Shifting the narrative from "healthy vs. unhealthy" to "functional fueling." This approach supports executive functioning and sensory preferences by focusing on nutritional density and personal satisfaction without body-shaming or moralizing food.
Learning Goal
Students will apply the "Four Pillars" framework to analyze their current fueling habits and design a meal that optimizes both nutritional density and sensory satisfaction.

Session Flow
01. The Joy Factor: Sensory Connection (5 min)
Slides 1-2
Goal: Establish a neutral, non-judgmental entry point focusing on preference rather than "health."
Facilitate discussion on food favorites. Validate all answers as "fueling the joy factor."
Distribute Note-Catcher; students log their sensory connection to their favorite foods.
02. Framework: The Four Pillars (10 min)
Slides 3-5
Goal: Introduce functional nutrition categories (Protein, Carbs, Produce, Fats) as "Strategic Fuel."
Define "Biological Information" and "Nutritional Density."
Explain the function of each pillar. Use professional terminology (e.g., "cognitive fuel" vs "quick energy").
Students complete the Pillar Analysis section of the Note-Catcher.
03. Application: Meal Design (10 min)
Handout: Meal Design Activity
Goal: Students synthesize information to create a realistic, high-functioning meal plan.
Individualized coaching: Help students bridge the gap between "what they like" and "what fuels them."
Focus on "Strategic Balance" (Nourishing + Satisfying).
04. Wrap-Up: Sustainable Momentum (5 min)
Slides 6-7
Goal: Identify one actionable "strategic shift" for the next 24 hours.
