Fuel and Fullness Teacher Guide Fuel and Fullness
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Topic: Practical Nutrition
Target: Teens / Young Adults
Lesson Overview
This lesson is designed for students with limited access to traditional kitchens or fresh produce. The goal is to move away from restrictive "diet culture" (counting calories) and toward functional nutrition : understanding how different foods provide energy and keep the body feeling full (satiety).
Learning Objectives
Identify the roles of carbs, proteins, and fats.
Recognize "satiety" and how to achieve it.
Build a balanced meal from convenience store items.
Key Principles
No calorie counting.
Zero food shame.
Focus on accessibility & shelf-life.

The "Hungry Again" Discussion
Open with: "Have you ever eaten a whole bag of chips but felt hungry 20 minutes later? Why does that happen?"
Focus on the difference between "filling the stomach" and "fueling the body." Introduce the concept of Satiety.

Visual Presentation: Energy Types
Use the Energy Hacks Slides to cover:

Satiety Scorecard & Meal Building
Students complete the Satiety Scorecard Worksheet . This includes two parts:
Part 1: The Energy Race - Ranking street foods by how long they provide energy.
Part 2: The Stay-Full Combo - Using the "Mix and Match" menu to build a survival meal that hits all three fuel types.
Trauma-Informed Tips
Avoid "Good" vs "Bad" Labels: For someone with limited options, any food is better than no food. Focus on "What does this food do for my body?" rather than "Is this healthy?"
Physical Cues: Many students may have ignored hunger cues for safety or survival. Reframe satiety as a "biological battery check" rather than a rule to follow.
Practicality First: If a student only has access to Ramen, don't tell them it's "unhealthy." Instead, talk about what they could add (like a packet of tuna or a handful of nuts) to make the energy last longer.

Common Misconceptions
"Fats are bad."
Correction: Fats are the most energy-dense fuel and essential for brain function and staying full when meals are infrequent.
"I need fresh vegetables to be healthy."
Correction: Frozen or canned veggies have the same nutrients. In a pinch, fortified cereals or nuts provide many of the same vitamins.
Accessible "Superstars" to Highlight

NO CALORIES. JUST ENERGY.
THE ENERGY SCALE
EMPTY TANK
You ate 30 minutes ago, but your stomach is growling. You're tired and shaky.
FULL TANK
You feel steady, alert, and full for 4+ hours. No "crash."
🔋
THE THREE FUELS
CARBS
"The Spark"
Quick energy for right now. Burns fast.
PROTEIN
"The Muscle"
Repair and long-lasting energy. Keeps hunger away.
FAT/FIBER
"The Anchor"
Slows everything down. Makes the energy last for hours.
CARBS: THE SPARK
Your brain's favorite fuel. Great for a quick boost before walking or working.
WARNING: If eaten alone, you will crash and feel hungry again very soon!
Common Sources:
🍎 Fruit / Juice
🍞 Bread / Tortillas
🥣 Cereal / Granola
🥤 Soda / Energy Drinks
🥨 Pretzels / Chips
PROTEIN: THE MUSCLE
Harder for your body to break down, so it keeps you full much longer than carbs.
STRATEGY: Try to include one of these at every single meal to stop the "shaky" feeling.
Common Sources:
🥩 Beef Jerky / Slim Jims
🐟 Canned Tuna / Chicken
🥜 Peanuts / Almonds
🥚 Hard Boiled Eggs
🥛 Milk / Yogurt
FAT/FIBER: THE ANCHOR
These are the secret weapons for not being hungry for 6+ hours.
FACT: Fat has more "satiety power" per bite than any other fuel type.
Common Sources:
🥜 Peanut Butter (The GOAT)
🥑 Avocado / Guacamole
🧀 Cheese
🥣 Oatmeal (Fiber!)
🌰 Sunflower Seeds
