The 35-Minute Lesson Flow
Pacing guide and interactive script prompts optimized for small spaces.
1. Welcoming Ritual: Eye Contact & Waves
5 Mins
Action: Set a positive classroom climate immediately as you push in. Lead a breathing focus.
Script (Teacher): "¡Hola, amigos! Let's sit tall, roll our shoulders, and look at each other with warm smiles. When we greet someone, looking at their eyes tells them: 'You matter to me.' Let's try it!"
2. I DO: Introducing the Greetings
8 Mins
Action: Project slides showing greetings. Act them out with visual/physical cues.
Script (Teacher): "Look at this bright sun rising! We say '¡Buenos días!' (yawn and stretch). Now, the sun is high and hot: '¡Buenas tardes!' (wipe brow). The stars are out: '¡Buenas noches!' (hands as pillow under cheek). Let's say hello: '¡Hola!' and goodbye: '¡Adiós!'."
3. WE DO: Name Exchange & Choice Greeting
10 Mins
Action: Introduce "¿Cómo te llamas?" and "Me llamo [Name]". Model eye contact and a chose greeting menu (Wave, High-Five, Elbow Bump).
Practice Game (Sitting in Place): Have students turn to a left neighbor, make eye contact, say "¡Hola! Me llamo [Name]. ¿Cómo te llamas?", answer, then select a physical gesture.
4. YOU DO: Friendly Faces Worksheet
10 Mins
Action: Distribute the worksheet. Instruct students to write their names clearly, match the day greetings, and draw themselves exchanging a wave with a classmate. Walk around supporting spelling and encouraging verbalized Spanish as they complete it.
5. Wrap Up & Exit Ticket
5 Mins
Action: Gather student attention. Direct them to answer the Exit Ticket. Reflect on the Essential Question: How did looking at our friends' eyes make us feel welcomed? Hand in tickets as a ticket-out-the-door.
Push-In Classroom Hacks
- Zero-Movement Greeting Circle: Since the room is small, have students stay seated at desks but turn their shoulders to neighbors rather than standing.
- Proximity Management: Move down the aisles as students work on their worksheets, listening to them whisper "¡Hola!" and "Me llamo..." to build teacher-student rapport.
- Visual Transitions: Use the slide transitions with consistent sound/visual cues to manage physical energy.
