Reduction Relief:
The Disappearing Block
One linoleum block. Successive carvings. Vanishing surfaces. Navigate the unforgiving logic of multi-color reduction printing.
RULE #1: Once carved away, linoleum is gone forever. Grades 10–12 Studio Arts
01
The Subtractive Imperative
Concept & Mechanics
Irreversible Time & Material
Unlike multi-block printing where every color has its own matrix, reduction uses one single block destroyed between each layer.
Light to Dark Value Law
Relief inks are semi-transparent. You must print from the lightest tone to darkest key. Each cut preserves previous ink.
The Vanishing Sequence
W
Step 1: Cut Highlights
Preserve the pure white of your rag paper.
L1
Step 2: Ink & Pull Tint Layer
Print full edition across all sheets.
L2
Step 3: Carve Mid-Tone Areas
Block is cut down further; pull Layer 2.
L3
Step 4: Final Key Value Cuts
Only skeletal line work remains on block.
Studio Strategy: Never wash a block until the full edition run is pulled! Slide 2 of 7
02
Four-Layer Value Architecture
Color & Contrast Strategy
Paper White
Layer 0: Cut 1
Carve highlights before inking. Pure white is unrecoverable later.
Target: Specular glints, cloud crests.
Tint / Pale Tone
Layer 1: First Run
Roll block in lightest tone. Print entire edition plus test proofs.
Coverage: ~80-90% of entire block.
Mid-Tone Body
Layer 2: Second Cut
Carve away preserved tint. Overprint with mid-value tone.
Coverage: ~40-60% of composition.
Key Shadow / Black
Layer 3: Final Cut
Clear broad mid-tones. Only fine ridges and deep shadows remain.
Coverage: ~15-25% key detail.
Color Rule: Transparent extender base creates lush tertiary optical blends! Slide 3 of 7
03
Pin & Jig Registration Mastery
Sub-Millimeter Alignment
Ternes-Burton Pins
- Mylar Strips: Taped to top margins of all sheets.
- Register Pins: Fixed to bed parallel to block.
- Click & Drop: Snap tabs onto steel studs cleanly.
Tolerance: < 0.5mm shift between passes.
Right-Angle L-Jig
- Block Stop: Block locked into inner 90° corner.
- Paper Guide: Corner seated against outer lip.
- Square Edges: Paper must be torn/cut 90° square.
Habit: Never alter jig placement mid-edition!
Golden Rule: Registration pins must remain taped down until all passes finish! Slide 4 of 7

Gouge Anatomy & Studio Safety
Tool Mechanics
V
V-Gouge (#1 & #2)
Cuts fine linear detail, contours, cross-hatching, and stops tear-outs.
Usage: Outline shapes before clearing interior fields.
U
U-Gouge (#3 to #5)
Clears broad negative spaces, wide highlights, and sweeping textures.
Depth Check: Carve deep enough so ink brayer avoids chatter.
Zero-Slip Safety
Your non-dominant hand must ALWAYS remain BEHIND the cutting blade!
• Push gouge away from body
• Bench hook clamped to table
Warm Linoleum Tip: A warm linoleum block carves like chilled butter; cold lino snaps and slips. Slide 5 of 7

Inking Physics & Edition Math
Press Craftsmanship
The Brayer "Hiss" Test
Charge roller in thin, multidirectional passes. Listen closely:
Silky Fine Hiss: Ideal satin film; sharp edges without squish.
Loud Squelch: Over-inked! Muddy lines and flooded gutters.
Attrition & Edition Numbers
Reduction is attrition. You cannot reprint a failed layer later.
Target Edition: 6 Archival Prints
Artist Proofs (A/P): 2 Proofs
Expected Attrition: ~4 Test Sheets
STARTING SHEETS: 12 Minimum!
Curatorial Standard: Number in pencil: e.g. 1/6, Title, Artist Signature, Year Slide 6 of 7

During The Pull
- ✓ Clean handling hands
- ✓ Consistent pressure
- ✓ Corner peel test
Post-Pull Care
- ✓ Rack sheets spaced
- ✓ Wipe block face
- ✓ 24h cure before cut

Disappearing Block Lesson Plan
Advanced Studio Art • Grades 10–12 • Printmaking Unit
Reduction Relief: The Disappearing Block
Duration: 7 Studio Blocks (90m)
Matrix: 6×8" Battleship Gray Lino
Unit Narrative & Instructional Focus
Students execute a 4-value reduction relief print from a single unmounted linoleum block. Because the matrix is destroyed progressively with every cut, students must think backward—anticipating layer interactions, paper shrinkage, opaque vs. transparent ink films, and exact registration tolerances.
NCAS Standards
- VA:Cr1.1.IIIa: Conceptualize layered relief systems.
- VA:Cr2.1.IIIa: Safe tool mastery & press calibration.
- VA:Pr4.1.IIa: Curate and sign an archival edition.
Essential Questions
- How does the irreversibility of reduction force critical foresight?
- In what ways do ink viscosity and brayer acoustics dictate print clarity?
- What distinguishes an authentic edition run from variable proofs?
Studio Equipment & Reagents
Battleship gray linoleum (6×8"), bench hooks, #1-#5 linoleum gouges, Ternes-Burton pins & mylar tabs, Caligo Safe-Wash oil relief ink (or water-soluble relief ink), brayers, baren/etching press, 250gsm BFK Rives paper (cut to 9×11").
Studio Pacing Guide: Part I (Concept to First Layers)
BLOCK 1
Value Mapping & Reverse Image Transfer: Lecture on reduction mechanics (Picasso, Sybil Andrews). Students complete the Reduction Mapping Worksheet, breaking reference into 4 distinct value fields. Iron-on or carbon transfer onto stained linoleum.
BLOCK 2
Registration Set-up & Cut 1 (Highlights): Demo Ternes-Burton pin mounting and mylar tab taping on 12 paper sheets. Cut away Layer 0 (pure paper white). Bench hook clamp inspection and non-dominant hand safety enforcement.
BLOCK 3
First Pull (Layer 1 - Tint Tone): Ink slab mixing (lightest tint + extender). Brayer hiss test. Pull entire 12-sheet batch (8 target edition + 4 proof/spares). Lay out onto drying racks. Clean block surface thoroughly without shifting registration jig.
BLOCK 4
Cut 2 (Preserving Tint) & Second Pull (Layer 2 - Mid-Tone): Cut away all areas intended to remain the Layer 1 tint. Overprint with mid-tone ink. Check registration crosshairs and pressure calibration. Monitor paper cockling or tack buildup.
