The Grip
Thumbs parallel. Palms folded together. No interlaced fingers (injury risk!).

Locked and rotated outward. Create the largest "flat" surface possible on your forearms.

The Shoulders
Shrugged toward the ears. Create a "pocket" for the ball to land in front of you.
Stop Swinging!
The biggest mistake in passing is using your arms like a baseball bat.
Real power comes from your legs.

Push through the ball with your knees and quads, not your biceps.

Students pair up in a "static pass" challenge. They must attempt to pass 50 times without moving their feet.
Teacher Tip: Watch for the frustration! After 5 minutes, bring them in. Ask: "Why was that impossible?" Leads into the need for leg movement and early platform formation.

Setup: Partner A tosses a ball. Partner B passes it back and MUST FREEZE their platform on contact for 2 seconds.

• "Press your thumbs to the floor"

Differentiation Strategies
Challenge
Add distance between partners. Require the pass to hit a specific height (10-15ft) to test leg power.
Support
Use lighter "training" volleyballs. Allow students to catch and then perform a "shadow pass" to build muscle memory.

Lesson 2: Dynamic Movement

Students will demonstrate the ability to read ball trajectory early, execute a shuffle step or crossover step to reach a target area, and establish a stable base before making contact.

Reaction Challenge (Tennis Ball)
Students stand 10ft apart. Partner A holds two tennis balls at shoulder height. They drop one randomly. Partner B must shuffle and catch it before the 2nd bounce.
Key Insight: If they reach for the ball without moving their feet, they will fail. The catch must happen with their body behind the ball.

Briefly explain when to use each step based on distance.
Shuffle: Short distance. Hips stay square. Low center of gravity.
Crossover: Long distance. Big first step. Sprint, then "plant & square."

The "Stop & Pass" Drill
Drill 1: Lateral Movement (15m)
Tossers throw balls 3-5 feet to the left or right of the passer. Passer must shuffle, stop completely, then pass.
Drill 2: Short/Long Movement (15m)
Tossers alternate between a short "dink" and a deep "push." Passer moves forward/backward using the crossover-to-shuffle transition.
Pro Tip: "Beat the ball"
Passers should try to be still for 0.5 seconds BEFORE the ball arrives. This eliminates the "momentum error" where the body's movement is transferred into the ball.

Why this matters:
A set isn't just a hit; it's a delivery. It requires the softest touch and the highest arc in the game.

The "Window" Technique
1. Hand Shape
Make a "triangle" or "diamond" with index fingers and thumbs.
Curved hands—like you're holding a large orange or a balloon.
Hands should be 2-3 inches above your forehead.
The Window Rule:
You should be able to look through the "window" between your hands and see the ball coming in.
"If your hands are at your chin, you're not setting—you're lifting!"

Let the wrists drop slightly back as the ball enters your hands.

Teacher Tip: Most students will try to "throw" or "slap" the ball. Stop them. Explain that accuracy in setting comes from hand shape and consistency , not force.

3. Partner Setting: Partners set back and forth. Goal: 10 in a row with ZERO spin.

The Geometry of Passing
If you are standing in the back corner of the court, and the setter is at the net in the middle...
How do you get the ball to them without turning your hips?
The Goal:
"Pass the ball over the net and land it inside a hula hoop placed on the floor."
Angle In = Angle Out
It's simple physics. If you want the ball to go right, your platform must face right.
The "Shoulder Drop" Technique
The Mechanic:
1 To pass RIGHT, drop your RIGHT shoulder down.
2 Keep your elbows locked.
3 Square your hips to the server, but your platform to the target.
Why not turn your hips?
Turning your whole body takes too much time. You must be able to react and angle your platform instantly.
