Lie flat on your back. Place a heavy book or weight on your stomach, just above the belly button.
2 Goal
On the Inhale , make the book rise toward the ceiling. On the Exhale , watch it sink back down.
If your chest is moving but the book is still, you are "Upper-Chest Breathing." Force the engine down!

Mechanics Training | Lesson 2
The Technical Objective
The goal of diaphragmatic breathing is to maximize air intake while minimizing muscular effort in the neck and shoulders. This sends a "safety" signal to the brain, overriding the stress response.
Alignment Protocols
Spine Neutral: If sitting, imagine a string pulling the crown of your head upward. If lying down, keep the lower back flat.
Shoulders Dropped: Actively pull the shoulder blades away from the ears. They should remain 100% still during the breath.
Jaw Unlocked: Maintain a slight space between top and bottom teeth. Tension in the jaw restricts the airway.
The Golden Rule

This lesson moves from the why (Lesson 1) to the how . Many students are "reverse breathers" (sucking in their stomach on the inhale). Your role is to break that habit through tactile feedback and anatomical visualization.

The Practice Flow
1. The "Reverse Breath" Check (5 Mins)
Ask students to put one hand on their chest and one on their belly. Tell them to take a big breath. Observe: Did their chest rise? Did they suck their belly in? Explain that this is the body's "Stress Default."
2. The Floor/Book Challenge (20 Mins)
Teacher Tip: Walking the Room
As students lie on the floor with books on their bellies, walk around and look for "neck strain." If you see a student's neck muscles popping out, have them tuck their chin slightly and visualize their lungs expanding into their hips rather than their head.

3. Transition to Upright (15 Mins)
Once they master it lying down, have them sit up. This is much harder because the diaphragm has to work against gravity and postural tension. Remind them: The book movement must be replicated by their hands on their stomach.

The Purpose of Rhythm
Counting provides the Pre-Frontal Cortex (the logical brain) a task to perform, which prevents the Amygdala (the emotional brain) from taking over. In this lesson, we transition from pure mechanics to performance-ready protocols .
Safety Note
Some students may feel lightheaded during breath retention. Advise them to stop if they feel dizzy. Ensure all practice is done while seated or lying down.

Box Breathing Drill (15 Mins)
Lead a group session. Use a metronome or a steady snap to keep time.
Common Error: Students rushing the "Hold" because it feels uncomfortable.
The Fix: Remind them that the discomfort is their Sympathetic system trying to "react." Calmness is the ability to ignore that reaction for 4 seconds.

The 4-7-8 Sleep/Panic Reset (15 Mins)
Explain that the 4-7-8 is different—it’s a "biological hammer" for when they can't sleep or feel a panic attack coming. The 8-second exhale must be audible (a "whoosh" sound). This audible release physically vibrates the Vagus nerve in the throat.

What is PMR?
"You cannot have a relaxed mind in a tense body."
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a two-step process in which you deliberately tense and then release muscle groups.
The Biological Result:
By creating Extreme Tension, you force the body to respond with Deep Relaxation. It’s like a spring being released.
Step 1: Tension
Tighten a specific muscle group as hard as you can (without pain) for 5-7 seconds.
Step 2: Release
Let the tension go instantly. Focus on the sensation of blood flow and warmth rushing back.
Residual Tension
Most of us carry "Low-Grade Tension" all day without realizing it. We are "clenched" in the jaw, neck, or shoulders.
The Clenched Jaw
Signals to the brain that we are in a "threat" environment.
The Raised Shoulders
Restricts the Vagus nerve and induces shallow breathing.
The Tight Core
Prevents the diaphragm from moving, keeping us in Sympathetic mode.
Try This Now: The Fist Test
1. Squeeze your right fist as hard as possible for 30 seconds.
2. Focus 100% on the strain in your forearm and knuckles.
3. RELEASE suddenly on my count.
Observe the difference between the right hand and the left. That difference is Conscious Relaxation.
