Lesson 1: Acting Out Verbs (TPR Strategy)
3rd Grade Mandarin
Objective
Students will recognize the characters for 看 (Kàn - Look), 听 (Tīng - Listen), and 说 (Shuō - Speak) and demonstrate understanding by performing specific physical gestures associated with each verb.
The Hook (5 Mins)
Ask the class: "If you were a secret agent and you received a mission in code, would you be able to follow the instructions without hearing a single word?" Show the slide with the three characters and challenge them to guess which one might mean "Look" based on visual clues.
Materials Needed
Action Heroes Intro Slides
Verb Tracer Worksheets
Large printed character cards
Instructional Workflow
1. Introduce the "Action Heroes" (15 Mins)
Use the slides to introduce each character. Model the gesture while saying the Pinyin clearly. Have students repeat the word 3 times while performing the gesture.
看 (Kàn): Hand over brow, searching the horizon.
听 (Tīng): Hand cupped behind ear, leaning forward.
说 (Shuō): Hand puppet motion near mouth.
2. Hero Speed Round (10 Mins)
The "Speed Round" is a elimination-style game. Show the character cards randomly. Start slowly, then increase speed. If a student does the wrong action, they must sit down and become a "Judge" to help spot mistakes in the next round.
3. Tracer Practice (15 Mins)
Distribute the Verb Tracer Worksheet . As students trace, circulate and ask them to perform the action and say the word. This reinforces the link between the stroke order and the meaning.
Pro-Tips for Success
Physicality Matters
The more exaggerated the movement, the better the retention. Encourage students to be "Dramatic Action Heroes."
Radical Teasers
Don't explain radicals deeply yet, but mention: "Do you see the little box on the left of 'Speak'? That's a mouth!" This sets up Lesson 2.

Finding the Secrets Inside the Characters
What is a Radical?
Mandarin characters are like LEGO sets. They are made of smaller pieces called Radicals.

Radicals often give us a clue about what the word means!

Lesson 2: Connecting Verbs to Body Parts
3rd Grade Mandarin
Objective
Students will use visual analysis to identify semantic radicals (Eye, Mouth, Ear) within complex action verbs, understanding that Chinese characters are logical constructs.
The Logic (Why this works)
3rd graders love patterns. By showing them the "secret pieces" inside words, you reduce the intimidation of complex characters and replace "rote memorization" with "logical deduction."
Vocabulary Focus
目 Eye (Mù)
口 Mouth (Kǒu)
耳 Ear (Ěr)
Facilitation Steps
1. Radical Reveal
Display the "Radical Detective" slides. For each radical, ask: "What body part does this look like?" Draw the evolution on the board (e.g., a cartoon eye morphing into the square 目).
2. Detective Hunt
Show a complex character like 吃 (Eat). Give students 10 seconds to find the "Mouth" radical. Celebrate when they point out the box on the left.
3. Body Part Match
Hand out the Body Part Match Activity . Students color the radicals within the larger verbs to "unlock" their meaning.
4. The "Go" Mystery
Introduce 去 (Qù - Go). Challenge: "Does this have a body part?" Lead them to see the 'legs' or movement in the shape, even if it's not a standard radical they've learned yet.
Critical Thinking Prompts
"Why do you think the character for 'Listen' uses an 'Ear' but also other pieces? Can you listen with just your ears, or do you need your mind too?"
"If you were to invent a character for 'Smell', which radical would you use? Mouth or something else?"

Lesson 3: Building Simple Sentences
3rd Grade Mandarin
Objective
Students will combine previously learned nouns with new action verbs to construct simple Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentences in Mandarin, recognizing that basic Chinese syntax mirrors English.
The "Safe Zone"
At this stage, avoid introducing measure words (like 'ge') or particles (like 'ma'). Focus purely on the 3-character "Brick" method to build confidence.
Core Components
Subjects
我 (Wǒ), 你 (Nǐ), 妈妈 (Māmā)
Verbs
看 (Kàn), 吃 (Chī), 喝 (Hē)
Objects
苹果 (Píngguǒ), 水 (Shuǐ)
Facilitation: Human Sentence Game
1
Assign Roles
Call three students to the front. Hand them large cards: one with a Subject, one with a Verb, and one with an Object.
2
Scramble & Solve
Have the students stand in a random order (e.g., Object-Subject-Verb). Challenge the class: "Is this a sentence? No! Let's fix the power flow!"
3
The Sentence Salute
Once the class directs the students into SVO order, everyone reads the sentence aloud together and performs the gesture for the verb. "Wǒ chī píngguǒ!" (and mimic eating).
For a Challenge
Ask students to create "Silly Sentences" (e.g., "Mom eats water" or "I look apple"). This tests if they are truly reading the characters or just guessing based on logic.
For Extra Support
Keep the color-coding consistent (Green for Subjects, Red for Verbs, Yellow for Objects) on both the slides and the cards.

Lesson 4: Playing Character Charades
3rd Grade Mandarin
Objective
Students will achieve mastery and rapid recall of Mandarin action verbs by acting them out and accurately writing the corresponding characters under time pressure.
Why Rapid Recall?
Moving from recognition to active production (writing) is the hardest step. The game format reduces anxiety and builds muscle memory through repeated writing.

Game Mechanics
Round 1: Solo Performance
One student from Team A draws a card and acts. Their team has 30 seconds to guess and WRITE the character. Point only given for correct characters!
Round 2: The Steal
If Team A fails, Team B can "steal" by having one member correctly write the character in 5 seconds.

Lesson 5: Writing an Action Comic Strip
3rd Grade Mandarin
Mastery Objective
Students will demonstrate comprehensive mastery of the sequence by creating a 3-panel narrative using correct Mandarin character forms and the Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) syntactic structure.
The Creative Link
Comic strips provide a low-stakes way for students to apply "scary" new language skills. The visual storytelling supports the character meaning, creating a dual-coding effect that solidifies learning.

Sentences are scrambled or use only 1-2 words. Character Accuracy Characters are legible and clearly match their intended meaning. Characters are mostly legible with minor stroke errors. Characters are unrecognizable or incorrect. Narrative Logic Visuals perfectly match the Mandarin text in every panel. Visuals mostly match the text, but 1 panel is unclear.
