Art Lab Guide
Lesson: Color Mix Magic
Grades K-2
Learning Objective
Students will apply watercolor techniques to create original art while demonstrating mastery of color mixing. They will use only primary colors (Red, Yellow, Blue) to create secondary colors (Orange, Green, Purple) directly on their paper.
Required Materials
- Watercolor Paints (R, Y, B)
- Thick Watercolor Paper
- Medium Paint Brushes
- Water Cups & Paper Towels
- "Color Mixer" Worksheets
- SciShow Kids Video
Science Spark
This lesson builds on the chemical reaction between vinegar (acid) and baking soda (base). Remind students that their paints were once liquid and fizzy before they became dry solid "cakes" through evaporation.
Instructional Sequence

Warm-Up: The Wait is Over (5 min)
Show the dried paint cakes (either from the previous lesson or the video). Explain that science and art often require patience.
"Remember how fizzy and wet these were? Now they are solid cakes! What happened to the water? (Evaporation!)"

Video: Activating the Color (5 min)
Watch the final segment of the SciShow Kids video (2:44 - end).
Look for: How Jessi uses the wet brush to wake up the dry paint.
Note: Highlight the primary colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue.

Activity: DIY Art Gallery (25 min)
The "Primary Only" Challenge. Students receive only Red, Yellow, and Blue paint.
Mixing Quest
Students use the "Mixing Lab" on their worksheet to find Green, Orange, and Purple by overlapping primary colors.
Gallery Piece
After mastering the mix, students create a "Free Paint" masterpiece in the large frame provided.

Closure: Gallery Walk (10 min)
Students leave their work on their desks. The class walks quietly in a circle. When you call "Freeze!", students point to a spot on the nearest painting where they see a secondary color (Orange, Green, or Purple).
Lab Talk: Key Questions
"How does the dry cake change when we add water?"
"Which two colors make green? How did you figure that out?"
"What happens if you add too much water to your paper?"
"How many different oranges can you make? (Light vs. Dark)"
