Chroma Quest
Grades 2-4 โข Art Class Exploration โข Duration: 60-75 Minutes
Focus Concepts Mixing โข Warm & Cool Tints & Shades โข Contrasts
The Mission
Students become "Chroma Wizards" on a quest to restore color to the faded Land of Grey. They will master paint-mixing mechanics to unlock beautiful spectrums and contrast portals!
Supply List
โข Primary Paints (Red, Yellow, Blue)
โข Value Modifiers (Black & White)
โข Sturdy watercolor/mixed media paper
โข Brushes, water cups, paper towels
โข Chroma Quest Lab Sheets (1 per student)
Prep Pro-Tip
Pre-portion paint on small paper plates before class. A pea-sized dollop of black paint is more than enoughโtoo much black will quickly overpower tints!
Lesson Questline & Pacing
1. The Spell of the Grey Wizard (Hook)
10 Mins
Gather students. Introduce the quest narrative: The Grey Wizard has locked away all colors! The only way to break the curse is to unlock the magical properties of the color wheel.
Dialogue Spark: "Wizards, look around. Imagine a world with absolutely no color. No bright green grass, no sunny yellow sunshine. Today, we mix our way back to brilliance!"
2. The Alchemy of Mixing (Primary & Secondary)
15 Mins
Demonstrate mixing live under a document camera or at the main table. Show how Red + Yellow make Orange, Red + Blue make Purple, and Yellow + Blue make Green.
Key Wizard Instruction:
Instruct students to complete **Quest 1** on their lab sheets. Emphasize wiping brushes clean on damp paper towels between mixes to avoid muddy colors!
3. Temperature Portals (Warm vs. Cool)
10 Mins
Split the color wheel down the middle. Discuss feelings associated with colors. Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) feel active, hot, like fire. Cool colors (blue, green, purple) feel calm, chilly, like water or ice.
Dialogue Spark: "Close your eyes. Imagine sitting next to a roaring fireplace. What colors do you see? Now, dive into a refreshing, deep ocean pool. What changed?"

4. Value Wizards (Tints & Shades)
15 Mins
Explain "Value" (how light or dark a color is). Introduce Tint (Color + White, soft like clouds) and Shade (Color + Black, deep like the night).
Mixing Rules to Reinforce:
Always start with the lighter color (white), then add small drops of your intense color to make a **Tint**.
Black paint is extremely strong! Add a microscopic dot of black to your color to create a **Shade**.
5. Complementary Clash
10 Mins
Show students complementary pairs: Red/Green, Yellow/Purple, Blue/Orange. Explain that they sit directly opposite each other on the color wheel. When side-by-side, they make each other pop and look incredibly bright!
Visual Demo: Place a red apple against a bright green background vs. a red background. Ask: "Which one looks like it is jumping right off the page?"
6. Assessment & Clean Up Spell
10 Mins
Distribute the Exit Ticket. Direct students to wipe down tables, wash brushes, and place lab sheets in the "Drying Portal."
Wizard Levels
Supporting (Grade 2)
Provide pre-mixed secondary paints if physical mixing becomes too frustrating. Emphasize warm/cool sorting over complex tint values.
Extending (Grade 4)
Challenge students to create a "Double Tint" (super light) and "Double Shade" (deepest navy/forest) on the back of their sheets.
Troubleshooting
My paint is brown!
Students likely mixed three primaries together. Remind them to rinse and dry brushes completely before touching a new paint pile.
Paper is tearing!
They are using too much water. Encourage "dabbing" water on paper towels before wetting the paint cake or brush.
