Mission Briefing: How We Play
SYSTEM: 4/4 TIME SIGNATURE
1. Body Percussion
Your instrument is your body: stomps, lap pats, hand claps, and finger snaps. Keep sounds crisp and controlled.
Tip: Precision over volume!
2. Cooperative HP
The entire class shares one Energy Meter. When one squad falls out of sync, the other squads support with steady counting.
Rule: No solo champions!
3. Sound & Silence
A musical rest is active, not passive! Freeze in place on rests. Rests hold the groove together just as much as notes.
Action: Freeze on beat!
Facilitator Cue: Listen for the countdown: "1, 2, Ready, Groove!"
Tempo: 92 BPM

In each box below, write the note symbol in the top half, and write your body percussion action (Stomp, Clap, Snap, Pat, Freeze) in the lower half.
Beat Quest Teacher Guide
BEAT QUEST: TEACHER GUIDE
UPPER ELEMENTARY (GRADES 4–5) • GAMIFIED MUSIC CURRICULUM
TOTAL TIME: 55–60 MIN
LESSON CONCEPT & PEDAGOGY: Beat Quest transforms rhythm literacy and ensemble cohesion into a cooperative role-playing game. Upper elementary learners progress from baseline internal pulse tracking (Level 1) through symbolic decoding (Level 2), multi-part poly-rhythmic independence (Level 3), and creative composition (Level 4).
CORE STANDARDS:
- • MU:Pr4.2: Read & perform rhythmic notation.
- • MU:Pr6.1: Perform with expressive intent & steady tempo.
- • MU:Cr1.1: Generate rhythmic countermelodies.
Suggested Lesson Timeline & Step-by-Step Flow
00–08 Min
Launch & Rules Briefing (Slides 1–2): Introduce the "Citadel" storyline. Establish body percussion safety (flat-footed grounding, soft fingertips on claps, silent rest freezes) and introduce the shared Class HP meter.
08–18 Min
Level 1: Pulse Patrol (Slide 3): Drill the 4-beat loop (Stomp, Clap, Stomp, Rest). Increase challenge across 3 rounds: Normal (84 BPM), Double-time (120 BPM), and Stealth Mode (silent counts). Students check clearance on their logs.
18–30 Min
Level 2: The Rhythm Cipher (Slide 4 & Adventure Log Page 1): Review notation values: ♩ (Ta), ♫ (Ti-Ti), 𝄽 (Shh), 𝅗 (Too-oo). Students solve the Cipher Math equations individually or in pairs to unlock Level 3.
30–42 Min
Level 3: Poly-Rhythm Duel (Slide 5): Split the class into Squad A (Bass Stomp), Squad B (Snare Clap), and Squad C (Hi-Hat Pat). Layer one section at a time. Challenge students to look away from other squads and rely on auditory cues.
42–55 Min
Level 4: Boss Battle & Composition (Slide 6 & Log Page 2): Perform the 16-bar Colossus sequence as an ensemble. Then, squads spend 6 minutes drafting their own 4-measure counter-attack on Page 2, followed by a quick debrief (Slide 7).
Sound Management & Non-Verbal Signals
Cut-Off Maestro Signal: Raise closed fist overhead. The rule is instant vacuum silence within one beat. Gamify this: test students with surprise fist cut-offs to earn bonus "Focus Crystals."
Body Percussion Acoustics: Instruct students that stomps must be heel-to-toe flat taps (no slamming heels into the floor). Claps should be cupped palms to generate a warm acoustic snap without physical sting.
