Lesson 2: The Four Views
The Instructional Goal
Students often struggle with the transition from a 2D sketch to a 3D block. This lesson is about congruency . If the front view shows a wide head, the side view must show the profile of that same wide head at the same vertical position.
Common Pitfalls
The "Floating Head" Syndrome
Students draw the head in the middle of the front plane, but at the top of the side plane. Ensure they use rulers to mark "top of head" and "bottom of chin" all the way around.
The "Paper Thin" Sculpture
Students forget the block has depth and draw a front view that takes up the whole width, but a side view that is only 1/4 inch thick. Remind them to use the full volume of the block.
Facilitation Strategies
The Rubber Band Trick
Place large rubber bands around the carving block at key heights (eye level, shoulder level). This gives students a physical line to trace around the block.
Mirror Check
Have students hold their block up to a mirror. Looking at the reflection helps them see if one side is significantly different from the other.
The "Block Walk-Around"
As you circulate, ask these questions to test their spatial logic:
"If I put my finger on the nose on the front, where does the nose 'end' on the side profile?"
"Which of these lines is the absolute furthest point out (the tip of the nose)? Which is the absolute deepest point in (the neck)?"

Lesson 3: Transitioning from Block to Body

Prevent "Over-Carving"
Teaching the "Safety Buffer"
The biggest mistake students make in this lesson is carving all the way down to their pencil lines immediately. This leaves zero room for refinement or mistakes in Lesson 4.
The "1/4 Inch Rule"
"Treat your pencil line like a fence. You can walk up to the fence, but you cannot cross it. Keep a 'buffer' of material on the outside of your plan."
Visual Demo Idea
Show a block of soap. Carve away the corners to make an octagon before trying to make it a circle. This intermediate step prevents flat-spots.
What "Roughing Out" Looks Like
SUCCESS
• No 90-degree block corners remain.
• The silhouette is recognizable from 5 feet away.
• The surface is bumpy and "chunky" (not smooth).
• There is still enough material for facial features.
WARNING SIGNS
• Student is carving tiny details (eyes, hair) already.
• Parts of the sculpture look "flat" (original block face).

Emergency Repair Kit
When a limb breaks off:
1. Keep the Piece: Tell students never to throw away "accident" chunks. They can often be re-attached using a toothpick (as a dowel) and a little tacky glue or even water (for soap).
2. The "Pivot": If a part is truly gone, help the student redesign. Maybe the cat now has a "tucked paw" instead of an extended one. This is a great lesson in artist adaptability!

Put away the large loop tools. Today we use styluses, small knives, and skewers .
The Golden Rule of Detail:
"Shallow first, then deep."
Don't carve a deep eye socket immediately. Sketch it lightly with your stylus first to make sure it's in the right place.

Rotation: Carve for 2 minutes, then turn the block 90 degrees.

Lesson 4: Transitioning to Fine-Scale Work
RESCUE GUIDE
"I Carved Too Much!"
Scenario: The Nose is Gone
A student was carving the nose but accidentally sliced it off. The face is now flat.
RESCUE:
Advise the student to carve the REST of the face BACKWARDS. By deepening the eye sockets and cheeks further, the "new" nose will emerge from the material that was previously the "back" of the nose. It shifts the entire face back 1/8th of an inch.
Scenario: The Tail Snapped
A thin tail or limb was being textured and it snapped off under the pressure of the tool.
RESCUE:
Option A: The "Doweling Method." Use a toothpick as a tiny internal support and glue the piece back. Option B: "The Redesign." Texture the broken area to look like it was intended (e.g., a stump, a tucked limb, or a rock the character is leaning on).
Success Strategies
TIP 1
The "Ghost Sketch": Require students to use a pencil to "draw" the eyes and mouth on the rough block before they pick up a carving tool. This visual guide is essential for symmetry.
TIP 2
Sanding Early: If a student is struggling to see the form because of rough tool marks from Lesson 3, allow them to do a light sand now. A smoother surface makes it easier to plan delicate features.
TIP 3
Depth check: If features look like they are just "scratched on" (drawing on stone), encourage the student to carve the area around the feature (like the eye socket) deeper. Depth is what makes a sculpture 3D.

Lesson 5: The Final Polish & Critique

The Educational Objective
The final lesson is about resolution . Students move from the "doing" phase to the "reflecting" phase. The goal is for students to see their work as a finished art object and to articulately discuss the spatial decisions of their peers.
The "Gallery" Setup

Have students flip their work mats to the clean side or replace them with black construction paper to provide a high-contrast background for their sculpture.
