Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students are introduced to the String Family. They will discover how sound is produced through vibrations (plucking and bowing) and learn to distinguish between the four main members based on size and pitch.

The Hook: The Singing Rubber Band
Hold up a large rubber band. Ask: "If I just hold this, does it make music?" Stretch it and pluck it. "What do you hear? Why is it making a sound?" Explain that strings work just like this rubber band—they need vibration to sing!
Core Concepts
How they work
Vibration is key. Plucking (pizzicato) or bowing (arco) makes the string move back and forth rapidly, which pushes air and creates sound.
Size vs. Pitch
The bigger the instrument, the longer the strings, and the lower the sound. Small = High, Big = Low.

Explore the Vibration
Use the Rubber Band simulation. Have students place a hand on their throat while humming to feel the vibration, then relate it to the string instruments.

Introduce the "Big Four"
Show images/slides of the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass. Emphasize the height comparison (Violin is a baby, Bass is a giant).

Listening Activity
Play clips of each. Ask students to "play" the instrument in the air. For violin/viola, chin up. For cello, sitting down. For bass, standing tall.

Lesson Overview

The Hook: The Grass Whistle
Show a simple straw or a blade of grass. Explain that people have been making music with "wind" for thousands of years. Ask: "Can you make a sound by just breathing? What if we push that breath through a tiny tube?"

What is a Reed?
A tiny piece of wood (bamboo) that wiggles when we blow on it. Some instruments have one reed, others have two (double reed)!
The Flute Style
No reed! Sound is made by blowing air across a hole, just like blowing across the top of a bottle.

Breath Awareness
Have students take a "musical breath"—deep into the belly. See who can let out a slow "sssss" sound the longest. This is how woodwind players control their sound.

Reed vs. No Reed
Introduce the Flute/Piccolo (no reed) and the Clarinet/Oboe/Bassoon (reeds). Explain that even though they are called "woodwinds," some are made of metal!

Listening & Discriminating
Play the high, bird-like sound of a flute versus the dark, "duck-like" sound of an oboe or the deep bassoon. Use the "Musical Breath" log in their worksheets.
Historical Note
Long ago, woodwinds were made of simple hollow bones or pieces of wood found in the forest. Today's modern woodwinds use complex keys and metal, but they still rely on that same ancient human breath.

Lesson Overview
Students discover the powerful, ceremonial sound of the Brass Family. They will learn the "buzzing" technique used to create sound and identify key instruments: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

The Hook: The Royal Fanfare
Play a recording of a classic "Fanfare" (e.g., Olympic Fanfare or a medieval trumpet call). Ask: "Who is coming? A king? A hero?" Explain that brass instruments are the "speakers" of the orchestra—meant to be heard from far away!

The Lip Buzz
Unlike woodwinds that use reeds, brass players use their own lips as the vibration! They "buzz" their lips into a metal mouthpiece.
Tubes of Metal
Brass instruments are essentially long metal tubes. If you unrolled a tuba, it would be over 18 feet long!

Introduce the Trombone (uses a slide) and the Trumpet/Horn/Tuba (use valves/buttons). Explain that changing the length of the tube changes the pitch.

Show or play a clip of a trumpet with a "mute." Discuss how the timbre changes from bright/loud to "sneaky" or "buzzy."
Game: Fanfare Echo

Lesson Overview

Any instrument that makes sound by being hit, shaken, or scraped belongs to the percussion family. This includes the piano!
Pitched vs. Unpitched
Unpitched (Drums, Triangle) only makes a "thump" or "ting." Pitched (Xylophone, Timpani) can play actual musical notes and melodies.

Start a steady beat (clap-stomp). Have students join in. Change the tempo (speed) and dynamics (volume) and see how quickly they can follow the "pulse."
