Subject Verb Patterns
Deconstructing the logic of regular -ER conjugation in French.
ARCH_01.SVA
The Architecture of Meaning
In French, the verb is the structural anchor. It must agree with its subject in two dimensions:
Person
Who is performing the action? (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Number
How many performers? (Singular, Plural)
Structural Rule
"Conjugation is the systematic modification of a verb stem to match its subject's identity."

Note on "On": Often used colloquially to mean "we," but grammatically functions as 3rd person singular.
2
The Conjugation Algorithm
90% of French verbs follow the -ER pattern. Apply the algorithm:
1 Identify the Infinitive (e.g., Parler )
2 Isolate the Stem by removing -er (e.g., Parl- )
3 Attach the Logical Ending

Lesson Objective
To transition graduate learners from memorization to systemic understanding of French verbal morphology.
Core Concepts
Morphological Stems
Desinence (Endings)
Phonetic Neutrality
The Hook: Code-Breaking
Distribute the "Verb Decoding Worksheet" before explaining the rules. Ask students to identify the "algorithm" for conjugation using the provided data sets. Graduate students often respond well to inductive reasoning tasks.
Instructional Delivery
1. The Stem-Ending Divide
Prompt: "In linguistics, we separate the semantic meaning from the grammatical function. The 'stem' carries the meaning (to speak), while the 'ending' provides the context (who/when). In French, the stem is incredibly stable."
2. Addressing the "Boot"
Discussion: "Notice that for 'je, tu, il, and ils', the endings are written but silent. This creates a phonetic 'boot' shape on the conjugation chart. Why might this be efficient for a spoken language, but difficult for a written one?"
3. The Plural Logic
Note: Emphasize the /on/ and /ez/ sounds. These are the only audible signals of a change in person in the present tense for -ER verbs.
Common Pitfalls
The "Silent -ent"
Students will want to pronounce the 't' in 'analysent'. Remind them it is a silent marker of plural, not a phonetic sound.
L'élision (J' vs Je)
Explain the logic of 'flow': French hates two vowel sounds hitting each other. Hence: J'étudie not Je étudie .
Answer Key Summary
Section 01 Rule: Stem = Infinitive minus -er. Add: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent.
Section 03 Translations:
Nous cherchons les données.
Le professeur explique la théorie.
Vous étudiez l'architecture.
Les étudiants analysent le texte.
Negation Brackets Slides Module 02: Syntactic Negation
The Logic of Negation
Treating French negation as a mathematical bracket around the verb.
ARCH_02.NEG
The Verbal Bracket
French negation is a two-part system. Think of it as a set of logical brackets that contain the conjugated verb.
ne VERB pas
Primary Constraint
The verb must be conjugated. The negation surrounds the action-engine of the sentence.
System Logic in Practice
Affirmative
Je travaille ici.
Negative
Je ne travaille pas ici.
Affirmative
Nous étudions le droit.
Negative
Nous n'étudions pas le droit.
Rule: If the verb begins with a vowel, ne becomes n'.
Replacing the "Pas" Variable
The bracket logic remains the same, but the second particle changes to alter the logical value:
ne ... plus no longer / not anymore
ne ... jamais never
ne ... rien nothing
ne ... personne nobody / no one
Analytical Drill
"Je ne regarde jamais la télé."
"Il ne comprend rien."
"Nous ne travaillons plus ici."
Opposite Day Challenge
I will make a statement. You must immediately negate it using the bracket logic. Use "pas", "plus", or "jamais" where appropriate.
Statement 1
"J'aime le café."
Statement 2
"Nous habitons à Lyon."
Statement 3
"Tu étudies toujours."
Statement 4
"Il cherche les clés."

ARCH_02.TASK
01
Standard Negation Brackets
Transform the following affirmative sentences into negative ones by placing the ne... pas bracket around the conjugated verb. Pay attention to elision (n').
Ex: Je travaille. → Je ne travaille pas.
Nous habitons à Bordeaux.
Elle écoute la musique.
Vous parlez anglais.
Ils cherchent les résultats.
02
Variable Logic Substitution
Substitute the pas variable with jamais (never), plus (no longer), or rien (nothing) based on the provided logical prompt.
Logic: Absence of Action (Never)
Tu étudies. →
Logic: Cessation of Action (No longer)
Nous regardons. →
Logic: Null Object (Nothing)
Il comprend. →
03
Error Detection & Deconstruction

01: Standard Negation Brackets
Nous n'habitons pas à Bordeaux. (Elision required)
Elle n'écoute pas la musique. (Elision required)
Vous ne parlez pas anglais.
Ils ne cherchent pas les résultats.
02: Variable Logic Substitution
Jamais: Tu ne travailles jamais.
Plus: Nous ne regardons plus.
Rien: Il ne comprend rien.
03: Error Detection
Item 1: Word Order Error
"Je ne travaille pas." (Bracket must surround the verb, not precede it)
Item 2: Elision Error
"Il n'aime pas le café." (Must use n' before vowel; also note definite article requirement)
Strategic Facilitation
The "Ne" Drop
Graduate students should be informed that in spoken, informal French, the "ne" is almost always dropped (e.g., "Je travaille pas" ). However, for structural mastery and formal writing, the "ne" is the logical opening of the bracket.
Logical Weight
Emphasize that pas, jamais, plus , and rien all occupy the same logical slot. They are mutually exclusive in basic sentences—you generally cannot say "ne... pas jamais".
Question Registers Slides Module 03: Interrogative Formats
Question Registers
Navigating the three levels of social formality in French question formation.
ARCH_03.QUE
The Three Registers
1. Intonation
Informal / Spoken
"Tu travailles ?"
Statement with rising pitch. Used with friends, family, and colleagues you know well.
2. Est-ce que
Standard / Universal
"Est-ce que tu travailles ?"
The "question marker" phrase. Safe for all situations. Grammatically regular.
3. Inversion
Formal / Written
"Travailles-tu ?"
Swapping verb and pronoun. Used in formal writing, speeches, or professional settings.
The Inversion Algorithm
Inversion is the most complex syntactic transformation. It requires three steps:
01 Isolate the Verb and Pronoun.
02 Reverse their order.
03 Join them with a hyphen.
Subject-Verb
Vous parlez
Inversion
Parlez-vous ?
Choosing the Register
Scenario A: Coffee with a friend
Goal: Ask if they are ready.
"Tu es prêt ?"
Scenario B: Asking a stranger for directions
Goal: Ask if they have a map.
"Est-ce que vous avez un plan ?"
Scenario C: Academic dissertation defense
Goal: Ask about the methodology.
"Analysez-vous les données ?"

Activity Concept
The "Jeopardy-style" hook reverses the cognitive process of communication. Students are provided with the answer (a statement of fact) and must deduce the three possible questions that would elicit that answer, each tailored to a specific social context.
Simulation Rounds
Round 01: Low Complexity Target: 2nd Person Singular (Tu)
"Oui, j'étudie à la bibliothèque."
Intonation (Inf.)
Tu étudies à la bibliothèque ?
Est-ce que (Std.)
Est-ce que tu étudies à la bibliothèque ?
Inversion (Form.)

Round 02: Medium Complexity Target: 2nd Person Formal (Vous)
"Non, nous ne parlons pas chinois."
Intonation (Inf.)
Vous parlez chinois ?
Est-ce que (Std.)
Est-ce que vous parlez chinois ?
Inversion (Form.)

Evaluation Criteria (Graduate Level)
Syntactic Precision
Does the student correctly implement the hyphen in inversion? Do they remember the 'n' elision if the answer implies an 'est-ce qu'il' structure?
Social Awareness
Can the student justify why they would use the informal version versus the formal version for each round's prompt?
"Goal: Emphasize that while the three questions are semantically identical, they are socially distinct."
Adjective Architecture Slides Module 04: Descriptive Harmony
Adjective Architecture
Exploring the structural placement and grammatical agreement of French adjectives.
ARCH_04.ADJ
The Standard Position
In French logic, adjectives usually follow the noun they describe.
Noun → Adjective
"Un livre intéressant."
"Une voiture noire."
Types that follow:
Colors (bleu, vert, rouge)
Nationalities (français, américain)
Shapes (rond, carré)
Religion/Spirituality
The BAGS Architecture
A small subset of high-frequency adjectives precedes the noun. We use the acronym BAGS:
B
Beauty
A
Age
G
Goodness
S
Size
"Un petit chat" vs "Un chat noir"
Morphological Harmony
Adjectives must harmonize with the noun in Gender and Number.
Condition Standard Change Feminine + e Plural + s Fem. Plural + es
Examples:
Le sac bleu.
La table bleue.
Les sacs bleus.
La tables bleues.
The Sorting Challenge
"I provide an adjective. You tell me if it goes in the Before bucket or the After bucket."
BEFORE (BAGS)
AFTER (Standard)
"Rouge"

Note on "Beau/Vieux/Nouveau": Remind students that these three adjectives have a special form before a masculine noun starting with a vowel (bel, vieil, nouvel ). This is a purely phonetic rule to avoid hiatus (e.g., "un bel homme" ).
Strategic Placement: Some adjectives change meaning based on placement. Un grand homme (a great man) vs. Un homme grand (a tall man). While not covered in this basic module, it's worth mentioning to high-performing graduate students to pique their curiosity.

Dimension Mastery (3 pts) Developing (2 pts) Insufficient (1 pt) Verbal Morphology Perfect stem-ending alignment for the chosen person. Minor error in plural ending (e.g., -ons vs -ez). Incorrect stem or phonetic spelling. Logical Connective Accurate use of 'parce que' or 'donc' to show relationship. Correct conjunction but weak logical link between clauses. Used 'et' exclusively or conjunction is missing. Agreement Harmony All adjectives show gender/number agreement and BAGS placement. Correct placement but missed feminine 'e' or plural 's'.
