Hold up a fresh or dried corn cob in one hand and a soft corn tortilla in the other. Ask the class: "How did this bumpy, hard vegetable turn into this soft, flat bread?" Allow students to share their creative guesses.
Activity Steps

Sensory Discovery
Pass around containers of dried corn kernels and bowls of masa-harina (corn flour). Let students feel the difference between the hard grain and the soft, powdery flour.

Making the Masa
Mix water into the flour to create a dough. Give each student a small ball of masa . Encourage them to smell it and feel its squishy texture.

Aplastar! (Flatten)
Show students how to roll the ball and then aplastar (flatten) it with their palms or a heavy book (or a tortilla press if available) to make their own pretend tortilla.
