Day 2: Studio Pacing (50 min)

00–10 mins: Mid-Point Recap Review pattern rules. Have students look at the back page (Composition & Pattern Plan). Explain the annotation method (P1, P2, P3, etc.).

10–35 mins: Layout & Plan Students sketch final composition, slice with 5–9 lines, and label pattern fields. Circulate to check for touching identical patterns.

35–50 mins: Rubric & Critique Students complete the 3-criteria self-assessment. Run a 5-minute rapid partner feedback "Gallery Walk" before final submission.

Troubleshooting Studio Pitfalls

• The Silhouette is Too Detailed

Issue: Student drew eyes, laces, or internal details on their bat/sneaker silhouette.
Fix: Have them trace only the outermost shape onto the back canvas. Internal lines spoil the camouflage effect.

• Divider Lines are Floating

Issue: Divider lines stop halfway or fail to touch the canvas borders.
Fix: Remind them that dividers must slice completely from wall-to-wall. Use a ruler to complete the paths.

• Patterns Touch or Bleed

Issue: Identical patterns (e.g., Pattern 1) are labeled in neighboring fields.
Fix: Have them audit their labels. Neighboring fields must have different pattern IDs (e.g., P1 next to P3 or P4, never next to P1).

• "Where is your eye drawn first? How can you use line weight to balance that?"
• "Do you have areas of solid black or high density? We need value contrast so the art doesn't look flat."

Rubric Grading Standard Guide

Score 4 (Exemplary): Silhouette contour is highly clear; 5-9 dividers block off beautiful fields; 7 patterns are fully planned and exhibit extreme line variety and shading.

Score 3 (Proficient): Silhouette is clear; 5-9 lines cleanly divide page; 7 distinct patterns are mapped out without neighboring overlaps.

Score 1-2 (Developing): Outline has too much inner detail; too few/many lines; patterns are simple or touch.

The Studio Critique Circle (Closure)

Before collecting the plans, have students complete a "3-Minute Camouflage Audit" with a neighbor. The partner must look at the canvas from 5 feet away and try to guess the original silhouette. If they can guess it instantly, the student may need to add 1 or 2 more divider lines to camouflage it further before turning in the planner.
