Why This Lesson?

Learning Objective
Students will learn to follow multi-step instructions to create four different origami patterns (heart, arrow, paper airplane, cootie catcher), developing fine motor skills and spatial reasoning.

Day 1 Activity
Let's fold a heartfelt creation!
Follow these steps carefully to turn a simple square of paper into a symbol of friendship.

Square Paper: Start with a square piece of paper. Lay it flat on your desk.

Diagonal Crease 1: Fold in half diagonally (corner to corner), then unfold. You'll see a crease line.

Diagonal Crease 2: Fold in half the other way (the other corners), then unfold. Now you have an "X" crease.

Top Corner: Bring the top corner down to the center point where the creases cross.

Bottom Corner: Fold the bottom corner all the way up to meet the top edge of your paper.

Sides: Fold the two side corners upwards towards the center to form the sides of the heart.

Round It Out: Tuck in the tiny points at the top corners to make them look softer.

Day 2 Activity
Pointing the way with paper!
Arrows show us direction. Today, we'll fold an arrow that's ready to point towards your next adventure!

Square Paper: Start with a square piece of paper on a flat surface.

Main Crease: Fold in half diagonally (corner to corner), then unfold. You'll have one center crease.

Kite Shape: Fold the top corner and bottom corner to meet that center crease. It will look like a kite!

Lengthwise Fold: Fold the whole paper in half lengthwise, bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.

The Head: Fold the pointed end down to create the head of the arrow.

The Body: Fold the sides inwards slightly to make the arrow's body look slim and sharp.

Day 3 Activity
Let's build something that flies!
Folding a plane requires symmetry. If both sides are the same, your plane will soar high and straight!

Rectangle Paper: Use a regular piece of printer paper. Lay it vertically.

Center Fold: Fold in half lengthwise (hot dog style), then unfold to make a center crease.

Corners In: Fold the top two corners down to meet that center crease. It should look like a house.

Roof Down: Fold that new top point down so it touches the bottom of your folded corners.

Double Fold: Fold the new top corners down to the center crease again.

Half Fold: Fold the entire plane in half, along your first crease, so the folds are on the outside.

Wings: Fold down the wings on both sides. Make sure they line up exactly!

The cootie catcher is an interactive toy. Take your time—this one has the most folds!

Square Paper: Start with a perfect square of paper.

Double Diagonal: Fold corner to corner both ways, then unfold. You'll see an "X".

Corners In: Fold all four corners into the center point where the creases meet.
4. Flip the whole paper over to the flat side!

Corners In Again: Fold all four new corners into the center point again.

Make it Flexible: Fold the square in half both ways to loosen it up.
7
The Pocket: Slide your fingers under the four flaps on the outside.

Pinch: Gently push the corners together from the bottom to pop it up.
