Your Guide to the Creation Station
The Power of Patience
Taking Turns
The Maker Space is for everyone! If a friend is using a tool, wait your turn with a smile.
Kind Words
Ask nicely: "May I use that when you are finished?"
The Tray Dash
Grab your supplies quickly so you have MORE time to build!
1. Pick a Tray
2. Grab Fast
3. Head to Table

Everything returns to its home bin.
2
Close glue tops and crayon boxes.

Check the floor for "scrappy strays."
Make the Maker Space look like nobody was even here!
Design Challenge #1
The Carton Creature
"Using only 2 egg carton cups, some masking tape, and glitter crayons..."
Create a creature that can protect a secret message in an envelope!
Design Challenge #2
The Shape Shifter
"Using fancy scissors and the pop-up shape books for ideas..."
Make a card that pops out toward the reader when it's opened!

Teacher Facilitation Guide
Topic
Makerspace
Objective
Students will understand the core expectations of the Makerspace—taking turns, efficient material collection, and thorough cleanup—while exploring new materials through creative design prompts.
Materials Checklist
- Egg Cartons
- Envelopes (various sizes)
- Masking Tape
- Fancy Edge Scissors
- Glitter Crayons
- Individual Trays
Duration
45-60 Min
Intro: 10 min
Making: 35 min
Cleanup: 10 min
Slide-by-Slide Talking Points
1
Introduction & Title
Hook the students by framing the art room as a "Creation Station." Explain that today is a special mission to learn how to use the high-demand materials fairly.
2
The Power of Patience (Turns)
Ask students: "What do we do if someone has the last piece of masking tape?" Emphasize that the space stays happy when we use kind words.
3
The Tray Dash (Efficiency)
Demonstrate picking a tray and grabbing 3-4 items in under 30 seconds. The goal is to spend time making, not standing in line.
4-6
Material Deep Dives
Egg Cartons & Envelopes / Tools & Tape / Glitter & Shapes
Highlight one specific "tip" for each. Example: "For egg cartons, use two fingers to hold it while you cut." For masking tape, show how to tear small pieces instead of using huge strips.
7
The Big Reset (Cleanup)
This is the most important part! Explain that the next class needs a fresh start. Introduce the "Scrappy Stray" hunt (checking the floor for paper scraps).
8-9
Design Challenges
Students can choose ONE of the two prompts to start. They should use the Planning Sheet first before heading to the supplies.
Strategy Corner
Differentiation
- Scaffold: Provide pre-cut egg carton cups for students with motor skill challenges.
- Extend: Challenge advanced students to create a "mechanism" using the envelopes (e.g., a pulley).
Check for Understanding
During the Tray Dash, walk around and give "Speedy Maker" stamps to students who get back to their seats quickly with appropriate materials.
Management Tip: The Glitter Crayon Rule
Glitter crayons are a "hot item." Limit students to 2 colors per tray to ensure everyone gets a chance to add some sparkle. Remind them: "Listen for the CLICK!" when closing caps to prevent drying.
