The Hook: Brain Split (5-7 min)
Challenge students to pat a steady 4-count beat on their knees. Once steady, have them try to clap the rhythm of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" without stopping the knee-patting.
Teaching Note:
"It's okay if they struggle! This illustrates that our bodies want to lock into the beat, but music requires us to manage the rhythm on top of it."
Direct Instruction (10-15 min)
Use the Slide Deck to define terms. Focus on the physical sensations:
Beat: The pulse you walk to. If the song was a person, the beat is their heartbeat.Rhythm: The syllables of the words. Clapping the lyrics of a song.
Activity: Drum Discrimination
Play a steady beat on a drum. Students march. Switch to a syncopated, flashy rhythm. Students must stop marching and instead "finger-dance" in the air.
The Battle Game (15 min)
Divide the class into two teams: Team Heartbeat and Team Pattern .
Play a popular, rhythmically clear song.
Team Heartbeat stands and marches the beat.
Team Pattern sits and claps the rhythm of the singer's words.
